A late October fire at Rothwell Haigh caused two fatalities and left a widow. A man from Graffingtons Innkeepers family died after stepping from Gordale in darkness. Earlier, a fire at Lacyite, near Leeds, caused damage but was extinguished. Nearby, a pottery works fire caused considerable damage before evening. In Birmingham, a man returning from the city with lottery tickets was robbed by footpads, losing his prize worth about 900 pounds.
