The Court of Directors warns all holders to weigh guineas and halves before payment due to widespread coin debasement. It prescribes minimum weights: guineas at 5 pennyweights 3 grains, half guineas at 2 pennyweights 16 grains, and seven shifting pieces at 1 pennyweight 18 grains, signed R Best, secretary.

Born in Dublin, he authored translations and historical novels, but his later years were marked by eccentricity, poverty, and erratic behavior, with periods of abstinence and dependence on charity.

Henry Fearon Heath of South Shields and Thomas Winterbottom of South Shields faced the Durham Quarter Sessions in a Wednesday trial over an assault on Lieutenants Yates of the Rothsay and Caithness Fencibles at South Shields Assembly Rooms on 29 November. Heath was found guilty and fined one pound plus two sureties in solvent, and himself one pound for good behaviour for a year. Winterbottom pleaded guilty after withdrawing not guilty and was fined sixpence.
