The Queen in state opened Parliament with royal procession and guards. Prince Frederick William of Prussia attended Buckingham Palace and London events before departing for the Continent. A deputation from the Merchant Taylors’ Company and City officials presented honours to the Prince, as royal visits continued at Windsor Castle and other sites.
At Oxford convocation Granville Robert Henry Somered was approved as an examiner in law and modern history while Rev. Robert Blincoe was admitted ad eundem. Congregation conferred multiple Masters and Arts degrees on a list of named staff and scholars. The Cambridge session noted further ecclesiastical and academic motions with several clerical and scholarship clauses debated and decided.
Brevet Major C E Oldershaw of the Royal Artillery is appointed Aide-de-Camp to Major General Lawrence CB, who commands the 3d Infantry Brigade at Aldershot.
The First Lord of the Admiralty appoints Captain the Hon. Charles G. Elliot to be aide de camp to the Queen. Commander William B. Urmston becomes inspecting commander of the coast-guard Tie Cryin. Retirements include J. Edge after 40 years at 800 pounds salary and 6307 pension. Joseph Penhorn to retire from the Royal Clarence Victualling-yard with 5000 pounds salary and official residence. Reports claim Royal Dock and Victualling-yard brigades may be broken up.
Ireland reports a grand display in Kingstown as a famed Sebastopol G un is honored. John F. Haddon Eny elected Mayor of Wexford for 1858. Stock Exchange shows varied government and company prices including Consols, Bank Stock, and several Irish firms.
A deputation from the Merchant Taylors' Company, led by the master and wardens, met at Buckingham Palace to present the freedom of the ancient fraternity to Prince Frederick William of Prussia. The prince replied with thanks and spoke of loyalty to the Queen and royal family, and pride in the union with the Princess Royal.
An inquest into the death of Edward Turner, a Yeast-maker, led at Preston Town Hall before coroner Mr M Myers. Alice Chadwick testified about the doctor Mr Monk's handling of the case and the will, while Monk was later arrested for forging the will. The inquiry adjourned to the 11th instant as Professor Taylor's stomach analysis awaited.
The Treasury and Bank of England correspondence from November to December 1857 records government consideration of a temporary relaxation of the 1844 Bank Act limits to meet discounts and advances amid bank failures and currency strains. It notes a 2 million pound excess issued, and details reserves, notes, and the mounting pressures on the Bank as Scotland and Ireland faced distress.
The Leviathan launch progressed with experiments to measure descent speed, including a pendulum chalk recorder. A stage collapse injured several observers. She described a Hull incident where a watch and money vanished, a concealed bully strangled the victim, and the weapon severed the throat. She claimed the loot was given to an aunt and the watch buried nearby, with the assailant later listed as awaiting trial in York Castle. The bench remanded her for further inquiries.
The Cuckoo paddlewheel steamer, number 3, lies beached between Chatham dockyard and the Gun wharf after running ashore and taking on water.
