Memorial tribute for Private Cyril Hedd 52nd Battalion

Estevan remembers Private Cyril Edward Hedd of the 52nd Battalion who died of consumption after wartime service in France and hospital transfers. His funeral was held at the Maurer residence with Methodist church services and a graveside salute by soldiers. The community and hospital friends contributed funds and flowers, and a photograph will be sent to his mother in Whittlesea England.

Resolution of Appreciation by Estevan G W V A Branch

At a meeting in the council chamber on July 17 the Estevan branch of the G W V A passed a resolution expressing keen appreciation to Major Smith Lieut Edmondson and Mayor Milne for their interest and kind consideration in the air of the organization.

Commissioner Sowton Delivers War Lessons at Salvation Army Citadel

Sunday afternoon Commissioner Sowton gave a lecture on Some Lessons of the War at the Salvation Army citadel accompanied by Major Coombs of Regina. Despite the heat, his talk held the audience for over an hour as he drew on Salvation Army work in Norway Sweden India and South Africa. J Thom formerly with Rumley Co and later Weyburn joined the Royal Flying Corps and visited town after a Toronto posting. He looks well and hopes to go overseas.

A correspondent at Napier Barracks Shorncliffe England describes a large Canadian Cavalry Training Depot setup with mixed units including the CAMC and RNWMP troops. Fire Alarm Sparks Kitchen Chimney Blaze at Clarendon

A flash fire erupted in the chimney of the Clarendon kitchen range on Tuesday at 11 30. Firefighters and locals rushed to the scene as Jake Krivel climbed the roof and Curly Adams passed water jugs from a top window. George Wickiow used Pyrene extinguishers while another man poured salt down the chimney. Inside, the cook calmly continued roasting, unfazed by the nearby commotion.

End of Chautauqua Celebration and Cleanup

After the final Chautauqua performance last week a crew pulled down the tents and prepared them for shipment. The chair praised the workers and the committee organized a lunch at Palace Cafe with I. Green staying open to accommodate them. The group praised the event and pledged to return next year, especially noting A. M. Taisey for leadership and L. J. Morris as secretary.

A Kaiser effigy placed on a street to advertise a motion picture was punched by a small boy who pressed his fist against it until nearly exhausted. The incident occurred on Monday and drew attention to the promotional stunt.

The council set aside a cemetery plot for returning soldiers and consecrated it yesterday during the burial of late Private Rudd, led by Chaplain Bucklee. Estevan Fair runs August 8 9 10, promising entertainment for all ages.

Big Attractions for Estevan Fair Show vaudeville acts and parade

Estevan fair will feature platform attractions including acrobats and trick cyclists with original stunts. Secretary Garner, returning from Edmonton, says top acts have been booked and a 24 piece brass band will perform during the fair. A merry go round pleases youths and a business men's parade with floats and decorated autos will be an important event with about fifty cars participating.

Town Council Debates Rates and Tax Exemptions After War Anniversary

After a three week gap the council met to discuss light rates for the Orpheum Theatre and popcorn machine power costs. Requests for tax exemptions for Hillside property and for a widow with sons in the army were referred to committees. Police receipts, patrol plans, and a central phone link to the power plant were outlined as plans to improve town services. The meeting included discussion of commemorating the war’s fourth anniversary.

Chautauqua Guests Dine With Local Members

A post concert gathering followed last Friday's Chau chauqua event in Estevan. About fifty Ellison White System delegates attended a luncheon at the International hotel. Speakers included Herbeman on community development and Stern of the Chauquas system praising local support for visiting lecturers and artists. Miss Bromfield credited gatherings for inspiring continuing Chautauqua lectures.

War Veterans Plan to Have Home

Estevan branch of the Great War Veterans met in the council chamber with Captain Bucklee Major Smith Lieut Edmondson and visitors from Moose Jaw hospital. They discussed securing quarters for meetings and winter activities and a possible memorial tablets project for Estevan soldiers.
