A near thousand residents gathered in Estevan and district to pledge support for the war against Prussian tyranny. Clergy, civic leaders, veterans, and students joined a procession from the post office to the grounds as songs of Canada were sung and sermons stressed liberty, democracy, and postwar education.

Soldiers Wives and Children Enjoy Picnic at Souris Grove

On Major J. A. Smith’s invitation, the wives and children of soldiers stationed nearby were entertained at a picnic in a grove by the Souris river. Automobiles, ice cream, bathing, and river exploration filled an eighty five degree afternoon. Hosts Mrs. Smith and helpers provided attentive service while guests praised the day and thanked organizers for the outing.

Seventh Annual Fair Opens To Day

The seventh annual summer fair opens today amid fine weather and strong entries. Over 400 school children’s sports entries promise brisk competition. Exhibits include cattle from J H Clarke Bienfair with twelve Holsteins and Cleophan’s Aberdeen Angus and Berkshire hogs. Races feature 15 harness events and five saddle horse events with more entries possible. The Rouleau Ladies Band performs tonight and a major baseball purse of 75 dollars caps the fair on Saturday.

Mix-Up on Hill Ends with Narrow Escape for Harry Kelly

Harry Kelly lost power on a steep grade near Oxbow when fuel-starved engine died and brakes failed. The car rolled backward, overturned, pinning him briefly but he escaped, freed the vehicle, and drove it to Estevan. Fender and roof damage were minor. minor repairs expected soon.
