It is an obvious effort on his part.At the recent preview of this film, at the Paramount, the audience liked it. As this reviewer recalls the story, Gatsby met his end alone. Not so in the movie However, the last scenes remain as written This reviewer qualms the appearance of Ladd as Gatsby. for Ladd has neverbeen, in his opinion, much of an actor. But, let it be said, I^add acquits‘ himself well in a difficult role, ghat of a bootlegger the *20s who pursues a dream to its ironic end All in the cast, perhaps that they were bringing screen a work of one of this country's finest writers, apparently give their best And most are excellent. Bettv Field as Daisy, the week,vacillating girl for whom Gatsby spends and gives his life, does notseem up to some ofsuperb performances, more than adequate.van, as her husband, of the pictifre’s best performances. One of the screenwriters on this film, Cyril Hume, himself hailed as a probable successor to Scott Fitzgerald in the literary world and who did not live up to his early promise, did himself proud on thebaron of romanticrealizingto thescreenplay.
