Since the success of “The Marcus-Nelson ^lurders,” “The Legend of Lizzie Borden” and “The Black Dahlia,” script after script is tumbling off the television assembly line based - —on actual events:--Recently there was the tw,o-hour MGM film on NBC, The Deadly Tower,” which reen-acted-in everygruesome detail the mass murders committed from the observation tower of the University of Texas in Austin by former Marine and student, Charles Whitman. When he was through with his rampage, 13 people were killed, 33wounded. ........Then, coming up Thursday onCBS television-is' “Foster and■'Laurie,”' a two-hour film special about the. brutal gunningdown of two New York cops — Officers Rocco Laurie and Gregory P. Foster. The Sam Sheppard case is due on NBC, which recreates the famed murder trial of Dr. Sam Sheppard, -starringi-George Peppard, “Helper Skelter,” the__stpry of _the Manson family, and the Lindbergh kidnaping are also on their way.In the same genre, only with different story-line emphasis, “Pueblo” and “Missiles of October have further pried open the door of reality and shown producers and script writers , a new direction to take on the home screen that offers opportunities free of restraints.Recently, too, there, was CBS* “Fear on Trial” production about the John Henry Fauik * blacklisting trial and “Home of 1 Our Own,” the story of Father William Wasson’s efforts to es-.. tablish an orphanage in Mexico.Whenever we view one of these factual presentations we wonder how accurate they are in their re-creation. Do script writers stick rigidly to the facts at hand? Do they take liberties for dramatic purposes? To those involved, does the retelling of the story appear to be accurate?
