Forced WithdrawalsSan Saba in all its splendor!Twenty-five hundred enthusiastic Rodeo fans cheered as the 2nd annual Jaycee Rodeo parade passed in review down the main thoroughfares of San Saba late Monday afternoon. Despite the fact that it had rained all morning and several important entries were forced to withdraw, the grandeur of the show was not diminished nor its spirits dampened.Twenty-seven floats, ninety horses and three hundred persons were counted as the line filed past the judges' stand.Betty Jo Turner, Queen of the Rodeo, accompanied by Bemie Hart, chairman of the general Rodeo committee, lead the cavalcade of horsemen immediately following Sheriff Will Doran and wife.After much deliberation and discussion among themselves, the three judges made their selections on the basis of three divisions: the float division, with prizes of $5, $8 and $2; the business division, in which honorable mentions were given; and the horse-drawn division. The judges were Mrs. W. E. Cantrell of Lometa, Mrs. John iG. Bterryf of Goldth waite, and J. M. Seay of Fort Worth.. Winning the first prize of $5 was the Hotel Beauty Shop float with a patriotic theme; the second prize of $3 was awarded to the Red Cross War Relief entry; and third prize of $2 was given to the Economy Store for its decorated convertibleELEVEN COUNTY SCHOOLS GIVEN HIGH RATINGState Board Grants Three Rural Districts One Year CertificatesEleven of the twenty-three county school districts in San Saba County recently were awarded permanent standardization certificates and three others were given standardization rating for one year by the State School Board, E. L. Oliver, county school superintendent, said Tuesday.These certificates place the schools on an even rating with the larger city schools making it possible for the students to transfer to a larger school without examination.The schools receiving permanent certificates are as follows: Algerita, Salt Branch, Antelope, Henry, Live Oak, Bowser, Post Oak, Bend, Bethel, Chappel and Fairview.The schools receiving certificates of standardization for one year are as follows Pebbly Point, Colony and Harmony.coupe.Receiving honorable mention in the business division were the Arhelger float with blacksmith shop and electric welding equipment in operation; the San Saba Ice Company with its float carrying flowers and fruit frozen in blocks of ice; the Western Auto Supply Co. entry with Cotton Brown riding a bicycle ejuipped with radio; and the Ford Motor Co.Receiving honorable mention in the horse-drawn division were the Simpson Creek entry with its float consisting of an old eovered wagon, the Pecan Grove float with its “California, or Bust tiheme, the Humble Oil Company's bukgy, and the two Indians, Bobby Joe, Pridgeon and Gordon Doran. IN TEN YEARSLatest Population Figure Gives County 10,985 for 1940 Cen.Climaxing a threc-day festival spirit, Betty Jo Turner was crowned queen of the seeond annual San Saba Rodeo Wednesday night before a good crowd of approximately 1S00 sports enthusiasts.Attending Miss Turner at the impressive outdoor coronation were Mary Katherine Sloan, Jessie Me-Fall, Joyce May Hendricks, Nell Hamrick, Louise Barker and Wanda Gibson.For the last three nights some of the best cowboys in the .state have been trying to hang on Jim McFarland's bucking broncs and Brahma steers without too much success.Several of tire boys have discovered that the sun-baked Rogan Field is hard despite the heavy »J*ain early Monday morning.Highlighting Tuesday night’s performance was the horse qua drill in which six men and six women, mounted on twelve of the Southwest’s finest horses,'pranced through a square dance to the music of the Home Brew Band. Tink Hamrick of San Saba, famous for his. knowledge of the old time square dance, was on hand to call the various movements. H. Jackson, of Coleman, it is announced that the county of San Saba now has 10,985 population for 1940 as compared to '10,273 on April 1, 1930. This records a gain in the county during the past ten years of 712 persons, or a 7 per cent increase over that of 1930.These figures are preliminary and are subject to correction if there is anyone who knows he has not been counted. San Saba spent Wednesday in Sweetwater on business, ,Mrs. Owen Parks, of the Pierian Study Club, who are endeavoring to raise the quota of $720 assigned to this county for American Red Cross War Relief, reported yesterday that up to that time a total of $428.66 had been raised with $291.84 yet to coroe to meet the quota. Since last week's report was published $104 has been turned in for the’local Red Cross Chapter, of which H. O.
