SpotlightBy Shannon JewellWZLE radio grows on 3rd birthdayHappy Birthday, WZLE!Hie radio station housed at the Sheffield Center on Rt. 254 last Monday observed its third birthday with all the proper hoopla.General manager Gene Sens and Ms crew of on-the-air personalities, sales and office staff have reason to be proud. They’ve developed a distinctive following in the Lorain County area, with their listenership reportedy stretching from Sandusky to Parma.The station first was heard on the airwaves July 14, 1975, with the broadcast philosophy of entertaining and serving the community by presenting what we feel is the finest in music formats, the hits of today and the past,” Sens said.Sens and his employees also believe to be effective in the community we most serve the communituy and then they serve you. We have wide open public service announcements for non-profit organizations.”He also cited strong involvment in other projects, such as holding a radio marathon to help the Lorain Little League program raise funds for a new ballpark and selling cookbooks of recipes donated by listeners to raise funds for the Betterway programs.The station opened with a staff of nine, broadcasting from 5:30 a.m. to midnight.Now there are 15 on the staff, with sports director Bruce Johnson, program director Jeff Baxter and Sens the originals still with WZLE. And now the station broadcasts 24 hours a day.As the station starts its fourth year, Sens said plans are “to continue to serve the community ...That’s of upmost importance in my mind. And we’d like to expand the news.The news staff now includes Bruce Camp and former WJKW-TV Channel 8 anchorman Jim Hale.We have female announcers, which is not unique to the business” but is not the norm for this area, he added. And live high school sports coverage plays a large part in WZLE programming.“Our main product we have to sell is local involvment. We're not just a Lorain station, but our main obligation is to Lorain and Elyria residents,” the manager said.Helping the station grow are the disc jockeys: Darryl Coleman from 5 to 11 am; Paul Andrews from 11 am to 1 pm; Bruce Johnson, I to 6 p.m.; Mike James, 6 pm to midnight; and Steve Mamie, midnight to 5 am** * *€Should you visit the theaters at Geauga Lake Park in Aurora this summer, or see a magician strolling the sidewalk, you'll spot Elyrian Dale Varga, who is working at the park this summer.Varga, a 1976 graduate of Midview High School, is working as a magician at the Palace Theatre, as a magician, singer and dancer at the open-air Goldrush Theatre and as the park’s Magic Mime along the walkways.Varga will be a junior this fall at Wright State University. He has performed his magic at clubs and been a dancer and magician in productions for the Elyria Summer Theatre Association.* * *Cleveland’s WJKW-TV Channel 8 is joining the disco craze with a new six-week series, “Hot City,” airing next Saturday through Sept. 9 from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.The program will feature the Emotions and Frankie Vaili as the premiere week guests. Dancers will perform on a large transparent dance floor with laser beams and mirrored ceilings completing the decor.At least one choreographed dance spot will be featured pr half hour.During the six-week period there also wiil be a dance contest, a segment called DiscoBio” with a tribute to a top performer using stills, film clips, music, and Disco-Gold,” tracing past musical hits from the 50’s through the 70's.
