fi-Bennington Banner, Thursday, February 12, 19(0St. Mary’s Alumni Smorgasborda Pre-Lenten Mardi GrasBy EDfTH BEAUMONTHOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. — Another of their traditional sue-cesses was scored by St. Mary’s Academy Alumni Association with their 16th annual Smorgasbord held Monday evening in the parish hall of the Church of the Immaculate Conception here. Some 350 persons filled the hall with a capacity crowd.As in most all of the previous productions, Walter Wirmuskywas the prime mover of the smorgasbord and director of the annual show. As a tribute to Wirmusky for his many efforts in behalf of the school and alumni activities, the 55-page souvenir booklet for this year's Smorgas. bord was dedicated to him. Robert Hayden,current alumni president paid verbal tribute to Wirmusky during the program and the audience responded with a hearty applause.President Hayden, in behalf of the Alumni Association, also presented a check for $1,000 to the Rev. Donald J. Ammering, OSA, pastor of the church, to be used for the school or church. Another presentation, an automatic washer, was made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, teachers at the school, for the convent.“Showboat” the theme of this year’s show, was a repeat (by popular demand) of the show of 1959, with some changes. Mike Waytkus in his first stage appearance in local show-business delighted the audience with role and song as “Snow.Another special attraction which created a sensation among the viewers was “The Delicious Seven,” a chorus group who were in dress of the roaring *20 era and performed with a song and dance of the same era. There will be election of officers to serve for the coming year and preparation of the budget. The guest speaker was District Governor Howard Dufresne of Manchester who discussed the state convention to be held at Equinox House May 22-24, and theinational convention set for July 1-4 in Atlanta, Ga.The group voted to donate $50 to the CARE program. It was also decided to continue the light bulb sale, visiting areas of the Pownals not previously covered.All Lions are requested to participate in the drive and areasked to meet ab the Pownai View Barn Saturday, Feb. 21,at 2 p.m. Proceeds of the sale will go into a fund for local residents who need assistance in having eye examinations and for the purchase of eyeglasses upon recommendation of a physician.The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 23, at the Club House Lounge with happy hour at 6 and dinner-meeting at 6:30 p.m.Ryan, assistant pastor of the local church in a raccoon coat withthe group as that member, brought the house down. Their dance routine, complete with gestures. drew a standing ovation and request for an encore.A newly discovered local talent was unveiled when Mrs. Gary (Collette) Albowicz in the role of Magnolia Wallflower won the surprised admiration of everyone when she revealed her exceptionally fine singing voice in two numbers and was called back for another. Mrs. Albowicz is the former Collette Sausville of Bennington.The show was presented following the smorgasbord dinner which was highlighted by numerous varieties and quantity of food dishes and delicacies, under the direction of Mrs. Wirmusky, Mrs. Anne Donovan, Mrs. Delight Cullen and Mrs. Kathryn Hayden. A. J. Salluzzo was Incharge of a group of 10 waiters. Mrs. Helen Levandowski was incharge of coffee for the 16th consecutive year.Special recognition was given to John Button, pianist for themusical numbers of the produc-tion; Fitzpatrick, Landry and John Delurey who contributed their services for the past two weeks in setting up for the production; to Sister Mary Joseph, lne lor printing of the program;and to Mrs. Margaret BakaJtis,Brian Valentine and Miss Stephanie March who were in charge of costumes and decorations.Father Ammering said the efforts of all expended in behalf of the event was a great tribute to the school, a reflection of loyalty and love and happy memories.
