Merrick, S3, veteran Zanesville musician and composer, died at 8:05 o'clock Tuesday morning at his home, 805 Merrick avenue, following four days' illness from complications.Mr. Merrick, who had directed a number of the leading circus bands in this country prior to his retirement in 1914, had maintained his interest in music and wrote his last march composition, Vote For iLandop,” in June, 1936r-He was born in Zanesville April 1, 1856. At the age of 16 years he went to Indianapolis, Ind., and worked in a foundry, later becoming a hotel solicitor. He went to Dayton, O., next and worked in a carriage factory, but returning to Zanesville not long after that he ■ took up house-painting. It was in 11ST4 that he found -himself”— —found a field to his liking, one for which he was fitted in temperament, taste and skill and which enlisted his energies during more than 40 years—the field of bandmusic. , . ..The beginning was made m the D. W. Atwood band and the instrument the young musician played was the E flat cornet. Later ■ he plaved that instrument in a band traveling with the original Van Amburg circus and then with the Billy McAllister Washburn “Last Sensation troupe.
