Cenotaph to be replacedStony Mountain monument taken down Aug. 5; new cenotaph to be built and installed in honour of people from all over municipalityBy Darren RidgleyStony Mountain residents may have seen an alarming sight early in the morning of Aug. 5 as public works staff from the RM of Rockwood worked to take down the town's old cenotaph.But the removal of the cenotaph is far from permanent. Rather, it's the first step in a project, long in the making, to build a new cenotaph that will pay tribute to people from all over the municipality.Heading up the project is a three-person committee consisting of Doug Mattila, Shirley Esaruk, and RM of Rockwood councillor Mark Hidlebaugh. However, Hidlebaugh told the Argus that plans to restore the cenotaph to its former glory predate their committee by many years. His late father had been one of the residents who had been working to restore the monument, as he and other legion members had once repaired a crack at the base of the cenotaph as part of their plans to fix it up.We had vets that had been working on replacing the cenotaph that had passed away who had not been able to finish the task, he says.As the cenotaph had been in disarray for a number of years, Hidlebaugh said its restoration was something he wanted to work toward once he became elected as councillor.I really wanted to address the problem with the cenotaph in Stony Mountain.
