New Sahara Sheik Makes Metropolitan Home This WeekTorrid desert wastes, Arabs, harems. charging- horses, a handsome . young sheik, and a beautiful girl — of such stuff Is A Son of the Sahara1' 1 composed. This picture and Waring1 a Pennsylvanians packed 'em in . at the Metropolitan yesterday and last night.The production is a gorgeous thing, and after seeing it one feels that it Is a pity it didn't arrive sooner. Had it been shown, say, before Valentino came In “The Sheik, it would have been much more appreciated. One reason for its untimely arrival, however, is that it was made in Africa, the director, Edwin Carewe, having taken a full company to the Sahara • for that purpose.“A Son of the Sahara is a typical sheik movie so far as the story is concerned, but for direction, scenery and photography it la far superior to other pictures of this type.Bert Lyteli is seen as Sheik Caelm Amrneh in “A Son of the Sahara.” He does not make nearly so dashing a sheik as Valentino, although he unquestionably does come nearer to portraying the desert chieftain as he really exists.Sheik Caslm falls madly in love with Barbara Barbler, daughter of Col. George Barbler, a French military power in Algiers. She falls also, hut breaks with him when she is told he is an Arab. As a matter of fact, Casim’s mother was a French captive and his father was a French eav-alry'ofticer. He had always believed, though, that his father was the sheik whom he had succeeded.When Caslm was a small boy, Col. 1 Barbier killed hia father, the old 1 sheik, in battle. Casim, standing over ! the sheik's body, swore vengeance on Barbier. His chance cornea fifteen \ years later when Barbler visits Algiers. The day before he starts out to ' get Barbier he learns that Barbara ' is his daughter. She having renounced him because of her discovery that he is an Arab, he decides to kid- 1 nap her and her father and take them to hia desert castle.When his men bring in Barbara he places her 1n his harem. He finds, however, when he Is about to make her hie own In desert fashion that his love for her la genuine, and that he would never be happy unless she came to him of her own volition. In the end both he and she discover that he is really white, and the conventional happy ending follows.Waring'a jazz-men play “Memory Lane, ‘'Worried, Eimehouse Blues,” and a number of other popular selections. T3ie remainder of the bill ia very good.
