Guards and Veterans Farewell amid Regimental Departures
A long letter recounts disgust at lavish leaving dinners for guards and regiments bound for distant posts, noting high casualty rates abroad and many veterans returning invalids. It laments the gap between long campaigns and homecoming and mentions a suicide linked to drink and deteriorating morale.
Emperor’s absence dispelled by Madrid report and pardons issued
The Paris报 reports the emperor plans to visit the Basses-Pyrenees department and will not return to Paris until month’s end. Madrid envoy M. de Perigny reports the emperor appears stout and well. A funeral for Duke Jenwal Ney, son Michael Ney, and Captain Afeirenberg occurred. The Eastern Comacry notes 2,542 pardons or reductions of penalties on the emperor’s fortieth day, with allocations across political offences, penal establishments, and military allowances.
