At Kempsey Police Court Thomos A. Lilley alias Leyden faced multiple charges including stealing pearls from Miss Gilray of Coffs Harbour, theft of £405 and goods valued at £9700, forging an identity card and ration book, and posing as an airman sergeant. The magistrate condemned his conduct as despicable and ordered twelve months in gaol after hearing he forged documents, stole clothing, and misrepresented military service to obtain items and favors.
A large offering of 1100 fat cattle was staged at Campbell's HII sale yards on Monday. Quality was varied with many drafts of medium to heavy weight bullocks. good town heifers were less common while well bred shorthorns were plentiful. Attendance and prices were steady with top bullocks at £16 16s, good to £16, and bulls to £14. Cows sold to £14 14s, middlings around £9, and yearlings up to £12 15s.
A light supply of calves around 300 head and 250 pigs attracted steady demand. Prices ranged with best heavy calves to £6 and lighter sorts from £0 to £3 10s. Pigs showed strong demand with backfatter classes, heavy porkers up to £0 16s and slips and suckers from 7s 6d to 24s 6d, as buyers remained active and market firm.
