In Newcastle Federal by election counting finished after distributing second preferences. Watkins led Smith with a 629 vote majority after Byes and Douglan candidates’ totals were added. Total electors 80,282. valid votes 04,119 and informal votes 08. Poll declared at the Customs House noon Friday by Divisional Returning Officer Mr. H. G. Burton.

Stroud Public School Its History and Transfer to Public Status
The Stroud Public School began as a denominational school under Ringland church and was transferred to the Department of Public Instruction under the 1880 act. By May 1883 the minister approved making it a public school, with premises leased until 1885 when a new building costing £1,700 was erected. The site and yard extended over several perches, and enrollments grew from about 10 to over 100 by 1885. Leaders included Mitchell, then Grainger, with a succession of teachers through the early 20th century. the school remained graded class Oh with Stroud as the town’s namesake, a key center for cloth manufacture and dyes in the region.
