Letters from a Royal Ship Describes Atlantic Privateers and Caribbean Sailings

A difficult-to-read communication from a sailor aboard his Majesty's ship Welfat Jamaica, sent to his father in Ipswich, mentions fighting Spaniards, rough seas, and reports from Madeira. It notes two American privateers cruising off the Canary Islands, a third preparing to sail to Boston, and the Chatham under Captain Strange arriving from Spithead to Gibraltar, then coasting to the Channel Islands with stores and men aboard.

Pirates Board the Rich Prize Yet Casualties Light

Reports describe a two hundred year old sea clash where a ship of 26 guns and 70 men resisted pirates who attempted to board. The attackers, armed with pistols and cutlasses, boarded in close quarters but the crew repelled them with no bloodshed. Also noted are dispatches about Governor of Jamaica and Admiral Vernon recruiting runaways from the Blue Mountains, and other naval news from the Atlantic, with mutterings of privateers, prizes, and ship movements near Jamaica and Madeira.
