Surrender of Calais draws crowds amid strong drama run

Reward Offered For Smugglers In Dublin Assault Case

A notice from the Commissioners promises a fifty pound reward for every smuggler seized and tried in connection with a seizure of two leaden carts containing tobacco on the Dublin to Castleknock road. Six to eight men attacked the officers, badly fracturing William Lumsden’s skull, endangering his life, and releasing the seizure. A further fifty pound reward is offered for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of any involved, with potential pardon for informants.
