A Night of Horror in a Hermit’s Forest Tale
In 1596 a Augsburg merchant travels with Gotthart and a strange hermit who seeks 6000 ducats in exchange for his life. The hermit’s cave reveals a nightmarish workshop of Death where victims suffer via poisons and torture. The tale expands into a longitudinal survey of Aqua Toluana myths, real Italian crimes, and historic poison trials across Europe, ending with references to Brinvilliers and the Chambre Ardento.
