Serjeant Torrens and magistrates discuss arming surrender, law enforcement, and peasant loyalty amid upheaval. Court cases reveal attacks on officials, notices threatening executions, and debates over education of minors in Protestant and Catholic faiths. Transportations, acquittals, and public notices follow with ongoing Cork special sessions and County Limerick concerns.
In May the Court of Chancery heard a motion to remove the minors from their mother’s guardianship and place them in a Protestant school at Clongowes. The mother sought delay to answer affidavits not yet reviewed, while counsel argued the case hinges on the mother’s agreement to educate the children in the Protestant faith and alleged violation by sending them to Clongowes. The judge considered a short postponement.
Court session reports libel verdicts against Arrowsmith and partners for newspaper calumny beyond ordinary observation. Lords consider Sir John Doyle divorce settlement, Catholic peers bill read, and Irish tithe reform disputes flaring with clergy and landlords.
The court proposes a guarded conduct for the defendants. They are to be imprisoned for three months in the Marshalsea custody starting from the end of their present confinement. Each is to pay a 1001 fee to the Crown and, upon release, provide personal securities of 5000 and two sureties of 1000 each for good behavior.
