Sheriffs Defend Newgate Chaplain Appointment Process
In a Assembly House meeting on the 12th, Sheriff Mond explained that sheriffs cannot appoint a Newgate chaplain without a Court of King's Bench order. After delays with Grand Jury appointees, they sought six to seven clergy from Dr Bray, who could not name multiple suitable candidates. They appointed Rev. Richard Henry of St Paul’s Parish, and were commended for their conduct. Norris and Gigard praised the sheriffs, and thanks were moved to them but suspended.
