A Birmingham mob attacked Hutton and Taylor properties, looting and burning houses, offices, and a theatre as authorities and constables struggled to disperse them. A list of destroyed buildings includes Hatton House, Taylor’s estate, and the New and Old Meeting-houses. Casualties and widespread fear followed, with military aid far away. Letters note Atlantic news and Newmarket bets.
Eight o clock in the evening reports describe rioters tearing down the homes of Mr George Humphrey and Mr William Ruffel Esq on the Oxford road. No military presence yet, depredations feared. bodies recovered from Mer Ryland’s cellar and Dr Priesily’s ruin. Crowd behaved with odd calm, as if hired by the owner at daily pay.
Sunday morning reports say no military presence yet as a massive fire at Molley Hall rages. Residents watch in fear while Lady Carhampton, aided by Sir Robert Lawley, is moved to safety. Under a High Court of Chancery decree the complete long term leasehold plots on Marys Abbey north side and on Great Britain Street in Dublin will be sold by public auction at one oclock in the afternoon on Saturday the 23d of July. The buyer will receive three dwelling houses and appurtenances with rents noted, the proceeds to satisfy the decree and costs.
