In a crowded court Mrs Hawkins, formerly Mrs Blosset, faced testimony from Sarah Fray and others about marriage settlements, reputational rumors, and family ties. Witnesses described Mrs Hawkins as social and influential, while arguments centered on a proposed annual settlement of £200 and the defendant’s intentions to marry for money. The jury returned verdict for the plaintiff, awarding £150 damages and sixpence in costs.

Davy Visits Saxony Mines Amid European Safety Tour

Sir Humphrey Davy travels to Saxony mines to assess safety, as he has done in England and Belgium. The narrative references Mataine Martin known as Mailemoiselle Gesselin of the Parman Battet, who died last week after a life of marriage to Martin of the Comic Opera. It also notes Mrs Ann Davis and a Wolverhampton widow who died and whose dilapidated house collapsed, burying her children.
