An Express from London describes Sir John Moore's forces at Astorga on December 31 and a skirmish near Benavente where the 18th Dragoons and German Legion repelled a French attempt. Details note British casualties under fifty and 70 prisoners taken, with reports of British strategy to guard Galicia. The Dublin County Quarter Sessions opened at the Sessions House in Green Street before the Mayor and board. The Admiralty telegraph lines along the Gulf of Lyons near Frontignan and nearby forts were blown up causing damage but no fatalities. Officers Mapleton Hore and others are praised for their conduct as about two thousand troops were moved from Figuey to defend the coast amid the incident.
On October 3 1808 off Fort Roy Martinique His Majesty's ship Circe spotted a brig under sail. After a short chase of ten to fifteen minutes she surrendered. The Palineur, commanded by Monsieur Fourniers, carried fourteen 24 pounder carronades and two larger guns with 79 men mostly troops of the 82d regiment. One man was killed and several wounded. The battery atop Point Salaston inflicted few shots.
