Marlboroughs Rise and Fall in the Reign of James II

Review of Memoir of John Churchill Duke of Marlborough by Coxe traces Marlborough’s early life from 1650 birth through his youth at court, his rapid rise after Tudor restoration, and intimate ties with the Duke of York. It details his contested loyalties during James II’s reign, his desertion for William of Orange, and the shifting political alliances that shaped his career and later service in William’s army.

Fragmented poem fragment with tragic meditation on life

The text presents a long, airborne excerpt showing a reflective poem about life, birth, aging, and death. It references figures and imagery such as Ulysses and Ther mopylae, and contemplates human fate, the inexorable law, and the search for beauty beyond the mortal span. The lines evoke a dramatic descent from birth to mortality and the solace of a transcendent light.
