Pope’s Armistice Articles Outline Troop Reductions and Neutrality
The document from Vienna on February 16 outlines articles of accommodation between the Pope and Imperial forces. It calls for reducing papal troops to about 5000, staged within ten days, evacuating territories by Imperial forces, and restrictions on new taxes. It preserves a limited Imperial guard, guarantees safe passage for Imperial troops, and proposes demilitarization of Naples and Mantua fronts while a council reviews disputes at Parmi Placentia and Comacchio. The Marquis de Prie lacks full power to finalize and will relay the terms to the Emperor by express.
