Beheading averted in Muscovy then banishment foe
An early April 1723 foreign notice reports Vice Chancellor Schaffhoff of Moscow facing death by axe for treachery. The Emperor reprieves him, replacing the sentence with perpetual Siberian banishment and asset forfeiture, while his wife departs for Russia. A secretary is punished by galley for seven years.
