Royal Court Names Lords Justices for Regime in Absence
In May 1740 at St James's the King appointed John Lorre Archbishop of Canterbury and a group of peers to the Lords Justices to govern during the monarch's absence abroad. Names include Charles Duke of Richmond, William Duke of Devonshire, and Sir Robert Walpole among others, with substitutions to offices of state and ordnance.
