Devastation by Mob In Chippenham and Melksham Incident
A large mob attacked Mr Colthurst's properties in Chippenham and Melksham, destroying nine houses, mills, and shops, looting, burning, and extorting money. Public officials, clothiers, and local justices faced threats. soldiers arrived under Lt. Grant to quell the disorder, and a proclamation was read to disperse the crowd.
