The Town Council met October 1916 with Mayor Hutcheon and Councillors Tansley Easter McDonald Norris and Arnold present. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. An acting secretary treasurer was appointed pro tem due to illness. Communications from British America Elevator Co and the C N R were read. sinking fund investment was enclosed. A committee of Hutcheon Easter and McDonald was formed to consider Homemakers’ use of the vacated Cameron office.
The Canadian Pacific Railway received a gold medal for its collective Western grain exhibit at the Quebec Exhibition. The display showcased grain from Western Canada and the grain crops of the Western Provinces. Attendance at the fair reached about 75,000 visitors.
Alex Dement was found guilty of horse stealing and received a three year term in Keys o o Sept. The trial before Judge Lament and a jury revealed missing cattle near Buffalo Lake in 1915. Dumont admitted prior penury in an American penitentiary and deportation to Canada.
A telegram from Regine states A F Mantle former deputy minister of agriculture for Saskatchewan and longtime director of winter and summer fairs was killed in action in France. Mantle trained with the 40th Battalion last April and later transferred to the 24th Battalion. Born in England he was 34 and survived by his wife and three children.
A periodic appeal from the Joint Committee of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St John invites nationwide support for a fund drive on October 9 or 10. Funds will aid wounded soldiers from the Front in Britain Canada and overseas. Provincial and local branches are urged to organize meetings entertainments and collections to back the effort before the stated date.
A building site at the east end of Washington Street has been acquired by Mr Wileow and partner, covering a full acre. Russell plans immediate construction of a fine dwelling. Burrell aims to erect another residential property for rent after the first house is completed. There is strong demand for rental housing as tenants struggle to find suitable homes.
