The town council debated a fire zone building bylaw infraction for 70 minutes and shelved the issue until October 14. Opinions split over enforcing permits for a Main Street building, with the solicitor asked to pursue action and a possible bond posting as a condition for temporary repairs.
A party of six tracked a troublesome bear nine miles north west of Gilbert Plains over the weekend. Frank Nataras, using a Savage 30 rifle at 50 yards, shot the bear in the chest and a second shot to the head ended the encounter. The hide was brought back after skinning.
Star hockey forward Bobby Love will play for Lethbridge in the Western Canada senior league this winter. In junior days he was a top scorer on two Dominion championship lines with the Portage Terriers and Toronto Navy, and he played last season with the Oshawa Generals.
Delegates from Dauphin ask the Board of Transport for a feeder airline linking Winnipeg Dauphin The Pas and Flin Flon with two planes due to no landing strip at Flin Flon. The effort aims to provide six minute service and mail daily papers and passenger service with transport to flying fields arranged in other towns. Dauphin will be represented by Wm. Bulfmore and Alex Katz K.C. The board may issue a franchise for the route, details of recipient not decided. Two airlines have shown interest and contacted locals.
The welfare department and the council clash over a relief case opened last May. The dispute centers on a deserted husband and father who left his wife and children without support. The council wants him returned to Dauphin and police action considered, while the department claims it informed the council of a sworn warrant from 1941. The department says it will discontinue representations to the council and asks it not to seek further department aid in Winnipeg.
After a wartime lapse the Ashville prize Bacon jams swine club fair returns on Monday in D. F. Wilson's barn. Judging starts at 2 p.m. District ladies plan a picnic. Wilson's hall is donated for the day and visitors are welcome.
The town council voted to set clocks back one hour to Standard time at midnight on Sunday September 29, following a national trend across Canada.
Representatives of the town council will meet the Dauphin Youth Services council on Thursday evening September 26 to discuss the youth council finances and future. The youth group says it will continue work but cannot finance it. a three person delegation will hear Ernie McEwen, former Dauphinite and now secretary of the recreation division of the welfare council, about funding needs and possible sources.
Rain fell daily except Friday totaling 1.86 inches with Sunday the heaviest at 6.6 inches and Monday at 6.1 inches. Harvesting is nearly finished, rain deemed beneficial. Snow reported west of here, six inches at Clear Lake, few flakes here Monday melted in street muck.
The Dauphin board of trade learned the telephone superintendent will meet with officials soon to discuss service. Members noted mixed recent improvements and rural complaints. The group urged road widening between Clear Lake and The Pas and better maintenance to Dauphin Pine River. They supported bacon price stabilisation and criticised hog feeder effects. A grain exchange abolition resolution was not voted on due to insufficient knowledge.
The council approved two street lights for the new veterans homes and thanked for the road. A stucco front permit for a frame building in the fire zone was unanimously denied. The town engineer upheld orders compelling compliance with moving contract provisions after an insecure foundation was found in a recently moved house. Manitoba Power Commission refunded 1074.95 dollars overcharged for water use before the water meter installation.
The fire and water committee reports G. W. Taylor formerly town foreman has agreed to be considered for reemployment after he completes an interview, with details pending.
Officials weighed a 16 inch concrete and asbestos pipe for the main water line between here and the reservoir. At 4.80 dollars per foot the concrete option appeared cheaper than steel though no steel prices were quoted.
The court of revision on the 1947 general tax assessments will be held on Monday October 25.
The Milk Control board announces a 1 cent per quart rise for standard milk and 2 cents for Jersey milk starting Oct 1 in Dauphin. Jersey and Guernsey milk plans are noted, with the subsidy expiry tied to the price change. Distributors will cover remaining costs to align with the subsidy phaseout. The council sought board jurisdiction and the health unit approved the Mc Killop dairy building as a distribution center, pending permits and renovations checks.
Two Dauphin stores were burgled by breaking front windows. Ron March’s grocery at Ver Milion and McLeod lost cigarettes candies toilet articles about 25 dollars and a small cash sum. Pete Cowton’s store at First Street and Eighth Avenue 8 S.W. lost clothing cigarettes and other items around 50 dollars plus 18 dollars in cash. Police detachment investigates both cases.
Dauphin Ochre Area No. 1 border districts will decide whether to join the large area plan or keep separate districts. Meetings are set across nine districts with votes to follow on specified dates in Lemberg Wilford Comrie Woodbend Halicz Laurier Mowat Norton Ferley.
