The Progressive Conservatives won 33 of 52 seats led by Hugh John Fiemming amid Liberal losses and one vacant district. Premier McNair lost his seat as Tory gains spread province wide to repeal the four percent sales tax and curb waste.
Thursday marks a key day for a five day civil defence orientation school in Dauphin Manitoba at the D M C C building. S J Bailey welfare planning officer for civil defence will fly from Ottawa to address the evening session. The program runs 2 30 to 10 30 p m with a two hour supper break. Lectures cover federal provincial and local civil defence structures and include speakers May Pendale Winnipeg Col A C Delaney Winnipeg Dr Wylie Winnipeg Miss J De Brincat Winnipeg and A Humphreys St Boniface.
A 237 name petition prompts first steps to form a municipal library in Dauphin rural municipality. The by-law would create a regional library with merger potential with the Dauphin library and allow a one mill tax to fund services. Rural electors will vote October 24 alongside municipal elections, with approval by majority.
Residents of Rorketon boast of a bumper wild mushroom harvest with carloads gathered in hay fields and backyards. The Borketon variety psalliota campestris grows abundantly, attracting visitors from Dauphin and Brandon. no local business has formed around selling mushrooms yet.
A report by Mrs. H. J. Everall at the first fall meeting details summer circulation from June to August totaling 4 055 with 2 298 senior and 1 757 junior loans. Fiction dominated, 1 876 senior works and 422 non fiction. June led with 1 676 loans. Registration rose 13 to 1 415 members. senior 32 joined, 31 cards cancelled. Gifts added 129 books May to August. 52 seniors and 48 juniors received new volumes, with 29 to a teen age section.
Sunny weather allows Dauphin farmers to resume harvesting with about 75 percent of the crop already gathered. If conditions hold, harvest should finish in a week to ten days. Elevators report most grain grades No 3 and 4 Northern and drying conditions improving. Space remains ample but tighter supply may occur if grain cars are lacking.
Plans for a second Red Cross blood donors clinic in Dauphin were finalized after a visit by Douglas Stewart. The Dauphin Legion will handle local arrangements with Albert Redgate as chair. The goal is 600 donors, more than double last year, and a townwide canvass is planned for Oct 8 from 6 to 8 PM to recruit volunteers.
The Dauphin chamber of commerce forwarded a request to Ottawa for a new post office building in Dauphin funded by 1952 estimates totaling 75 000 dollars and to address immigration and customs facilities. A survey will justify the need. officials noted a prior public buildings ban and cited delays in Winnipeg for imports. Support also came from Flin Flon and The Pas chambers.
The past week saw average temperatures dip with a single 70 degree reading and several readings in the 60s. Frost occurred Monday and Tuesday with lows around 29 to 30 degrees, while last year’s weekly highs and lows were 67 and 17. Farmers benefited from minimal rain, about .05 inch, amid mixed data from late September notes.
August permits totaled 531 110 up from 508 305 last year with 704 permits worth over a half million since January 1952. Commercial activity included 12 permits totaling 164 200 for the new year and 7 repair and alteration permits totaling 6 925 in August.
Paul Platz is named coach for the 1952-53 Dauphin Kings after an extensive town search for a player with coaching credentials. A Winnipeg product, Platz played for the 1938-39 Monarch junior team, later with the Chicago Black Hawks and in the Inter-service league, then coached the Sidney Millionaires. He is 29 and married, standing six feet tall and weighing 180 to 190 pounds.
