Ochre River third annual show highlights youth farming clubs

The Ochre River community hall hosted the third annual show with Grain club Potato club Boys Garden club and Girls Garden club exhibiting. Judges Wm Murray and John Conner praised quality and variety awarding prizes to top entrants and thanking sponsors and attendees.

Wm. Voss manager of the Dauphin branch of the Manitoba Co operative Dairies receives congratulations as his Manco creamery butter wins three firsts and one third at Toronto and three firsts and one second at London Ontario in recent competitions.

Rotarian Speaker Urges Support for Horticultural Societies

John Walker of Manitoba Extension Service addressed the Dauphin Rotary Club sharing two talk themes: boys' and girls' garden clubs and established horticultural societies. He emphasized youth independence, community contribution, and adopting scientific methods to maximize four month growing seasons. Other speakers included Jas A Campbell describing Jasper National Park and John N McFadden on Rotary contacts from Vancouver.

Round up of nine in alleged Manitoba shop theft gang

R C M P detains nine suspects linked to a summer spree of robberies across Roblin Inglis Shell Valley and Gilbert Plains. Ring leader Bill Gorda and four companions were arrested earlier, with two more nabbed after a Roblin heist recovered cash and goods. A Durant sedan tied to Gilbert Plains theft is recovered damaged. Boys Work Groups Open for Fall Winter Season

Dauphin hosts the boys work board with about ninety boys and ten leaders attending a fall and winter meeting chaired by Principal G M Churchill. Ray Dicks serves as secretary treasurer. The senior Taxis group will include older boys led by Churchill and J Lysecki. Dr A D McKee will head a large intermediate Taxis group.

Dauphin Council Bans Slot and Vending Machines

The Dauphin town council reversed its stance from licensing to banning slot and vending machines after reviewing gambling risks. A bylaw to prohibit their operation was passed with immediate effect. Other measures approved included town pump leases, school levy collections, and track leveling for sports events at the fair grounds.

Does Kindness Pay Hitch Hikers Turn Robbers

H O Driver of Brandon gave a lift to two hitch hikers near Dauphin. They robbed him at gunpoint about 14 miles west of Bagot, taking his car and $10 before leaving him bound and gagged in a ditch. Driver, well known in Dauphin, was ambushed after picking up the men.

Construction on Clear Lake Highway Commenced

Survey finished the eight mile Clear Lake highway project between here and Riding Mountain National Park began Monday. Strang and Watson are the contractors with forty four horse teams and a large labor force. Local labor quota is sixty percent and town and rural councils will source teams from the town. Completion is set for November 15, connecting to the park road and creating a direct route from Dauphin to Clear Lake.

Ellen Mustard Playford Dead After Illness

Mrs Ellen Mustard Playford wife of James Playford of 906 Riverwood Avenue Winnipeg died after a long illness at home early Friday morning September 14 Funeral services were held at Dauphin United Church Sunday afternoon She was born in Gladstone Man sixty two years ago and moved to Dauphin 1892 later to Winnipeg in 1913 Survived by husband one son Steve five daughters Nellie Eileen Phyllis and others plus three sisters and a brother.

New Home For Wholesale Firm To Be Erected

Western Grocers Limited will build a two story brick warehouse after acquiring property along the Canadian National right of way beside Main Street. The fire loss on September 1 forced the move, with Carter-Hall of Winnipeg contracted to erect a 75 by 100 foot building costing 45000 dollars. The site, now an old United Grain Growers elevator, will be demolished before construction begins.

Two months for assault on Mrs Romanski

Leonard W. Gordon received two months hard labour after being convicted of assault on Mrs May Romanski. While intoxicated he proposed marriage, then grabbed her by the throat and threw her to the floor. Her sixteen year old son intervened and police were summoned. Gordon was placed in town cells pending trial.
