Dauphin Soldiers Report Air Raid Nearby

Pte Allan Reid dated Aug 24 from Dibgate camp England writes of Dauphin men in combat zones. He notes Meek as quartermaster at Epsom, others at Epsom and returning wounded, and describes a recent air raid near the camp with German and British planes and eleven fatalities. He mentions Dover proximity and home-news appreciation.

Boys and Girls Fair Thrives at Ethelbert Town Hall

Despite threatening forenoon weather the Boys and Girls club fair drew large crowds. Exhibits totaled 201 across woodwork grain growing pig and calf raising vegetables poultry baking sewing canning and more. A standout was a young woman with 20 quarts of home canned produce.

A string of fragile notices reports births at Dauphin and Gilbert eyeine. Mr and Mrs C B Narraway welcome a child on the 12th, and Mr and Mrs 8 L Day greet a son on Sept 14. Further entries note a birth on Sept 15 and other private notices from area families.

Round the Elevators and Wheat Trade at Full Tilt

The busiest area is around the elevators as fine weather speeds threshing. Grain moves in from all directions and is shipped promptly. No. 1 Northern wheat tops $2.07 per bushel at street price. Railways require full loads, 40 ton cars 94 000 lbs and 30 ton cars 66 000 lbs, to conserve cars for lakefront navigation.

I C D E Notes Help Belgians And Soldiers At Front

Two bales of clothing were shipped to destitute Belgians and another bale is being prepared. Last week 48 boxes of tobacco socks candy and more were sent to men of the 226th Battalion. The society has prepared over 75 pairs socks for the 50th Battalion. An October 6 lecture Life at the Front by war correspondent Mr Villiers of the London Illustrated News will be held in town hall. Sewing in the rooms on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Soldiers' Aid Society Bazaar Planned for October 18

The S A S members prepare a holiday festival style bazaar on Oct 18 with booths offering useful and fancy articles. Donations of items are welcomed and a $2.00 gift from Mrs Mc Gee is acknowledged. The society seeks addresses of any members with the 226th or other units in France.

Big Potato Competition Yields Record Produce

The district reports a prolific fall potato crop with high quality spuds. W H Felker left a potato at the Herald office on Wednesday measuring 9 inches long with 12 inch girth and weighing 344 pounds.

1.C.D.E. Opens Social Season With 500 Party

The 1.C.D.E. held a Friday evening 500 party at Mrs. Robt. Hawkins’ home to raise funds for the 226th Battalion. Proceeds supported the organization’s members. The Herald subscription costs $1.50 yearly in advance.

Grounds for Military Service Exemption Outlined

The article lists eight exemption grounds under the Military Service act including continuing essential employment, education, hardship from financial, business, or domestic obligations, health, and religious belief against combatant service. A ballot style form will require a cross at the chosen ground and goes to a local tribunal with supporting proof.

Red Cross Plans Xmas Boxes for District Soldiers

Threshing proceeds with a fine wheat sample. At the Red Cross monthly meeting at Mrs. Armstrong's home the group arranged sending Xmas boxes to district soldiers. Lady collectors were appointed and final packing plans will be set at the October 2 meeting at Mrs Lachlan's in Spruce Creek.
