Tragic Fire Kills Tom Scrase at Hamilton Hotel Blaze

A deadly early Friday fire at the Prentice livery barn and Hamilton Hotel endangers ten horses and a dog. Fire claimed the life of firefighter Tom Scrase by suffocation, with coroner's jury finding misadventure as the cause. One other fireman suffered burns as damage spread through the rear of the hotel and garage.

Mrs J W Jackson of Ochre River Dies

Mrs J W Jackson died at her Ochre River home on Friday September 11 after a lingering illness. Born Helen Walker in Stayner Ontario she came to the community in 1901 and remained a resident. Survived by her husband three daughters one son two brothers and one sister. Funeral held Saturday from United Church to Ochre River cemetery with pallbearers C Ash J McGregor J Ferrier W Ross and A Boles.

Funeral for Thomas Scrase Honours Dauphin Fireman Hero

Hundreds gathered at an Anglican church service for Thomas Scrase 28 a Dauphin fireman who died Friday while fighting a destructive blaze that damaged the Prentice Savage livery barn and the Hotel Hamilton. Scrase a noted local athlete in hockey and football for 15 years served seven years as a volunteer with the Dauphin fire brigade. He is survived by his parents four brothers and two sisters. Six fellow firemen were honorary pallbearers and six others served as pallbearers at the service.

A general meeting for Scout and Cub leaders and all interested in the Boy Scout Movement is set for Friday at the Armoury. Executive secretary Mr. Mills will attend. Full attendance is requested.

Prairie Chicken Season Set For Oct 12 13

A two day prairie chicken shooting season was set for October 12 and 13. The daily bag limit is 10 birds and the season limit is 20. The season includes prairie chicken ruffed grouse and Hungarian partridge, with pheasants closed. Dr W J Harrington of Dauphin attended as a Game and Fisheries Commission member.

Engineer and Contractor Clash Over Dam Wing Walls

At a Friday Town Council meeting contractor William Newman opposed the dam wing wall plans, warning he will build to his own specs if changes aren’t made and stating he has ordered reinforcing steel and will pour concrete soon. Superintendent Cecil insists the current design follows sound engineering practice and is safe.

Tweedsmuirs to Pass Through Dauphin on Wednesday Afternoon

Lord Tweedsmuir the Governor General of Canada and Lady Tweedsmuir with their party will travel via Train No 15 to Prince Albert through Dauphin on Wednesday September 23. The Dauphin Board of Trade discussed a longer visit and the council may invite them to officially open the children’s playground. A local committee will organize details. They return via Train No 16 on Tuesday September 29.

Fracas leaves Dauphin man wounded near Ripon schoolhouse

Rodney Lintick of Dauphin was hospitalized with head and neck wounds and a severed arm artery after a Friday night fight at a Ripon schoolhouse dance. Mike Sprot was arrested after police search and charged with wounding and grievous bodily harm. Lintick reportedly asked for a cigarette before the stabbing.

Woman Found Dead in West End Home

Mrs. Kosmer Gaioloski aged 61 was found dead in her home Monday after being last seen Thursday. Neighbors reported the body and the death was attributed to natural causes with no inquest. Funeral held Monday.

Daly is Named to Canadian National Railways Board

Brent L. Daly of Winnipeg former Dauphin conductor is named representative of CN labor on the new CN board of directors for a two year term. The appointment follows unanimous agreement by railway brotherhoods in Montreal. Daly, born March 14 1844 in Charlottetown P E I, has 30 years in Western Canadian railroading and holds key CN labor posts.
