A fire training drill was conducted at the smoke house on the Ste. Rose training grounds. Three participants from St. Boniface fire department took part and emphasized hydrant use following recent town hydrant installations.
More than 800 head sold at Ste. Rose and district cattlemen’s association feeder sale on Sept. 10, drawing buyers from United States Ontario and Manitoba. Abe Weiner of Winnipeg led purchases with 258 head to Windsor. top price reached $21.60 for eight Hereford steer calves. The sale foresees a strong turnout at the Sept. 24 event.
The past week was cooler with showers on three days keeping harvesters out of fields. A trace of snow appeared on the 10th with flakes in the air. Sunday night the temperature fell to 23 degrees near the meteorological station south of town as gardens suffered, tempering clearing efforts.
Glen Clarkson of First Dauphin troop received the Gilwell neckerchief and wood badge at the Gilwell reunion in Winnipeg on Sept 12 and 13. Hugh E. Fox presented the honors as Clarkson completed his Gilwell training. About fifty scouts attended from the United States and Canada. Clarkson began leadership nine years ago after joining the movement, and has two sons in Rover and Brownie groups.
Premier Duff Roblin announced an agreed trucking reciprocity between Manitoba and British Columbia effective immediately. The deal reduces costs for Manitoba trucks and BC trucks entering the other province, with full license fees paid in the home province and ten dollars per gross ton in the reciprocating province. Small trucks under 6000 pounds and trucks hauling household goods receive full reciprocity.
Carpet salesmen in Vancouver praised a display of national and local ads including the Dauphin Herald advertisement from Dixon Paint and Flooring re opening in February. The layout was singled out as outstanding and featured Harding carpets, a line stocked by the local store.
The Dauphin CYO of St. Viator's R. C. parish held annual officer elections on Monday September 14. Re elected for a second term as president was Rick Zaplitny with Alexis Hawrysh as vice president and Bonnie Garlinski as secretary treasurer. Other officers include Lorraine Mazur Mike Ohryn as social council Peggy Skene as spiritual and Robert Skene as educational. Very Rev Z A Baczkowski served as chaplain and about 36 members attended.
Premier Duff Roblin announces an immediate survey to assess living costs and wages for Thompson area workers. The study measures how many employees with dependents earn under 400 dollars monthly to gauge how many families require low-cost support.
Minutes from the Dauphin Ochre area school board meeting reveal Trustee Durston criticizing unofficial reports to the public and a subsequent statement by A C Matthews clarifying the board did not officialize or endorse any arbitration award on teachers salary. The arbitration report had not yet been submitted.
The Canadian highway safety council urges motorists to slow down for safer vacation motoring and cites human error as the root of most road crashes. It argues drivers possess common sense to distinguish danger but often ignore safety devices and good practices.
