Trio of cheque artists jailed in Manitoba towns

Three young men who passed worthless cheques totaling hundreds of dollars in Manitoba harvest towns were sentenced to penitentiaries. They forged prominent local names, cashed small cheques, and were caught after police tracked them from Saskatchewan to Manitoba. Sentences run concurrently. more charges are pending in Alberta.

Spectacular Fire Recalled As Town Clears Old Lot

The vacant Burrows Avenue lot recently transformed after twenty seven years of neglect. A 1910 blaze destroyed the last building, including a hardware store and confectionery, while a lurid late 1904 incident near the rear platform became local lore. Recent work has removed debris and weeds, restoring the site’s ordinary appearance. Rainfall figures for 1937 and 1936 are listed by Searle Grain Co.

Saskatchewan Man Injured When Car Upsets in Ditch

Walter J. Sword of Ogema Saskatchewan is hospitalized in Dauphin General with neck injuries after the car he rode in overturned on No. 5 Highway near the Ashville junction. Mrs Sword, driver and sole other occupant, was not hurt. The 1935 Ford was badly damaged.

Rotary Governor Pays Visit to Dauphin Club

Oliver MacIntyre of Edmonton, governor of Rotary International 116th district, spoke at the Dauphin Rotary club luncheon about the Nice convention. He highlighted welcomes for delegates by France's Lebrun, Mussolini in Italy, and the Duke of Kent in England and urged ethics in business while noting political unrest in Portugal and the need for peace through friendly understanding.

Dauphin Welcomes W Normandin Tannery Opening

Mr. W O Normandin plans a new tannery on Front Street in Dauphin beside Imperial Oil. Named Dauphin Tannery it will use the government registered All Weather Proof Suede Process for cow hide and buffalo robes. Hides tanned with this process promise heat resistance washability softness and mothproofing. The owner promotes the product line including coats and robes and invites public viewings.

Dr Bewell Wins Golf Trophy at Clear Lake

Dr H E Bewell captured first place in the annual Clear Lake golf tournament hosted by the Western Manitoba Dental Association. More than thirty entrants competed with Bewell receiving the championship cup for one year and a smaller cup for permanent possession.

Manitoba grain officials defend current wheat grading noting higher moisture and weather caused browning bronzing green kernels and green kernels plus threshing difficulties and fungus creating black paint and smudge which lower milling value and grading results.

Dauphin to Send Car of Vegetables to Dried Out Area

Dauphin and district will ship a carload or more of vegetables to Saskatchewan’s dried out regions. National Railways offers free transport. The first carload should depart about Sept 28. Gets Additional Six Months for Assaulting Jail Guard

Alex Wolski, already serving nine months for theft, received an extra six months after being convicted of assaulting jail guard Thos. McMillan during duties. The offense occurred late July when Wolski struck McMillan with a fist. Crown attorney C. S. A. Rogers appeared. Wolski has eight prior convictions and was involved previously in a local garage theft case.
