Nomination day on Oct 17 kicks off elections for 11 seats on the town and rural councils, the town mayor seat, the local and area school boards in the Dauphin area. Terms expire for several councilors and school board members, with re election anticipated for Mayor W L Bullmore and multiple seats open across districts.
Town council approved new town hall rental rates at Monday’s meeting. The finance committee recommended a tiered schedule for programs including concerts with admission at 25 dollars, bazaars and teas 10 dollars for afternoon, dances 35 dollars for outside groups, and non admission events 5 to 10 dollars depending on time. Badminton club rents are five dollars per period.
A new weekly comic strip debuts this week in The Herald titled The Adventures of Captain Morgan. It follows a young Welshman beginning life at sea with adventures designed to entertain both young and old readers. The first episode appears on page nine.
William John Danyluk a 40 year old Dauphin district farmer was killed about 8 30 pm Monday when struck by an east bound truck five miles west of town on No 5 highway He had been driving home from town chasing his hat which blew off his head The truck owned by Bryce Bakery and driven by Steve Mymko of Dauphin The inquest opened by coroner Dr R W Dicks and adjourned to undetermined date He is survived by his parents widow and three sons Funeral is Sneaths Funeral Home for 10 am Thursday
The 1894 Minnedosa Tribune notes Dauphin as a village with 20 dwellings while Minnedosa is described as a fair sized village. Times have changed as Dauphin now has about 5000 people and Minnedosa under 2000.
H C Ray principal praised a very cooperative staff at the collegiate in his first area board report. He noted crowded grade 9 rooms, asked for extra desks, and the board agreed. An assistant principal appointment went to N G Aitken as the agriculture course seeks growth with new equipment and a plow.
Roy Bell, 20, shot a two under par 34 on his last nine holes at Dauphin Country Club, part of a 72 for the round. He edged past brother Bill Bell and teamed with Ray Johnston in a local match, while a cart loan led to a costly ride back.
The Dauphin Rotary club hosts a three day carnival at the DMC C industrial hall with games, concessions, and a Saturday matinee for children. Chairman Alf Buckwold and a committee run the event while Dr. R M Creighton invites all to attend. Proceeds support the club's service work.
Mayor W. L. Bullmore announced a new Dauphin fire truck costing 10000 dollars is due this week. The town plans to display the vehicle at the Rotary carnival opening tonight.
Dauphin saw its first frost on Wednesday as temperature at the airport official low of 31 degrees. Gardens showed frost, with lower town temperatures suspected. weekly rain totaled 1.13 inches including 0.02 inches Monday.
Dauphin Ochre School Area Board wrestled with transport issues at an evening meeting. East highway riders, five or six students, may ride the north route bus to the east highway after morning runs, with a town departure around 8 30. A new Fargo school bus, purchased through McNiven Motors, will serve the south route by Sept 30.
Dauphin council approved a busy slate including bus franchise talks with J E Henderson and T M Durston, resignation of Councillor J A Yurkiw, by laws on gas and inflammables, and fire bylaw amendments. They sold 38 feet of town land for highway widening, noted 108 lots available for sale, approved staff travel to Regina, leased air rights with R E Forbes, set new town hall rents, and approved 5000 parking violation courtesy cards for RCMP. Fines reported for August totalled 95 with 14 costs to the town and provincial/federal portions listed.
Dauphin town council debated a winter bus service proposal by J E Henderson and T M Durston. A vote could be held with the October 21 municipal elections, pending agreement with bus operators and Winnipeg Public Utilities Board approval, with possible special meeting and ad time requirements.
Outstanding pupil Mildred McMurray daughter of Mr and Mrs Jack McMurray received word Saturday she was awarded a Manitoba Scholarship worth 325 a year for two years The scholarship is sponsored jointly by the Department of Education and Manitoba University Miss McMurray was graduated from Grade 2 in D C T I in June In her Grade 11 year she won the Governor general s medal.
