Field Marshal Jan Smuts, 87, South African leader and statesman, died from the cumulative effects of pneumonia influenza and heart strain. Tributes poured in from around the world for the wartime hero, former prime minister and organizer of the League of Nations and United Nations.
The United States strengthens authority with a new control bill to curb credit and wage price powers. The plan aims to direct essential materials to defense output, curb hoarding, and speed mobilization while inflation is checked. President Truman cautions Americans to expect changes in daily life and work.
Special permits to shoot to scare wild birds off crops are issued by the RCMP under the Migratory Birds Act. Farmers may apply at nearest detachment. permits allow up to six assistants and prohibit killing birds. No Dauphin-area permits yet, but McCreary reports large flocks of cranes and ducks damaging barley and wheat.
The North Korean offensive toward Taegu continued with no major gains while fighting raged along a 112 mile front. British casualties rose with six days of combat producing 14 wounded and two missing as UN forces report heavy losses and a UN corridor traps a large Communist force near Phang.

Mayor Bullmore established a nine member committee to supervise the athletic director's work in Dauphin. Members include the police health and relief chair, finance chair, Dauphin hockey and baseball presidents, the Collegiate principal, elementary supervisor, and the mayor. The group will meet to review reports from athletic director Alex Robertson and support town recreation initiatives.
Town council warns Ukrainian Community hall known as Eighth Avenue Hall may lose its dances license after ongoing trouble at Saturday events. RCMP reported 15 liquor and assault convictions and one officer beaten on July 15, hall promises extra staff and asks no further incidents to avoid cancellation.
Enrollment across Dauphin's four schools reaches 1407 students, a new high. Collegiate grades 9 to 12 rise to 369 or 372 with expected additions, up 42 since term start. Smith-Jackson junior high adds 10 bringing total to 2742 for grades seven and eight. Questionnaires are sent to rural one room schools for next week figures.
