Long Awaited Rotary Carnival Comes to Dauphin Skating Arena

The Dauphin Rotary Carnival runs September 12 13 and 14 at the Dauphin Skating Arena with nightly prizes and games including electric bingo a live mouse game grocery wheel air guns and a kiddies fish pond. Proceeds go to help the less fortunate while attendees enjoy a free entry and a chance to win 5 00 each evening by presenting a door attendance slip.

Gravel Truck Overturns After Collision On Highway

A gravel truck driven by John Kinaschuk of Fork River overturned after colliding with a car driven by Neil Birss of Dauphin on No. 10 highway one mile south of town. No injuries were reported. Birss and Kinaschuk describe conflicting signals prior to the crash. the truck was insured and the car uninsured.

Fall moisture focus shifts to next crop year

With the harvest finished, attention turns to fall precipitation starting Aug 15. Rainfall tallies show 2.28 inches to date, 1939 period 1.13. Enrollment at the Collegiate totals 267 across grades XII to IX, with 19 in XII and 267 overall.

Still Doing His Bit A Manitoba War Sock Hero

George W. Barker of Dauphin province aged 70 knits socks for active service. He uses his left hand with a sling while his right elbow is useless from an old accident. Five rib stitched pairs last summer were sent to the Salvation Army Red Shield service. His son Billy Barker, famed WWI ace, began shooting young and later joined the Royal Flying Corps and soon served as a gunner.

James Anderson, chief of police, says crab apple and plum thieves are active again this fall. At least one gang was caught in the act Monday evening and others are being picked up periodically. Vandalism damages trees and gardens, with offenders to be dealt with severely.

Huge Aircraft Advertises Bond Issue in Dauphin

C A F headquarters at Winnipeg ships bought from American airlines for air observers' schools under the B C A T P. The Electra resembles Lockheed Hudson bombers used by the RAF coastal command. Leaflets urged buying bonds to aid Canada's war effort and warned of the danger to unprotected towns if invaded.

Dauphin Expects Second Wheat Quota Soon

Dauphin is expected to receive its second wheat quota almost immediately along with about thirty Manitoba and Saskatchewan points. First quota deliveries are near complete as 95 percent of wheat and 90 percent of coarse grains are threshed. Harvest should finish by week’s end while a wheat embargo limits shipments from storage-rich areas.

Federated Budget Requests Near Ten Thousand Dollars

The Dauphin Federated War Fund drive aims for about ten thousand dollars in late October or early November. At the Sept. 6 meeting in Town Hall, total budgets reached 8800 though not final and excluding the Y M C A or an emergency fund. A three member committee will review budgets with delegates from societies before final amounts are set.
