First Garden Show Held At Durston A Decided Success

The inaugural Durston garden show received strong exhibitor support from local farmers and the community. Judges John Conner and John Walker visited to assess entries, with Walker outlining judging criteria. A silver tea, children’s fishpond, candy sale, and a baseball game accompanied the event, proceeds aiding the Women’s Institute. Prize winners included Mrs. W. H. Durston and Mrs. C. R. Durston among others. the report notes continued coverage on page 4.

Car crashes into shop shattering plate glass windows

Brakes failed and a car rolled onto the sidewalk hitting the shop entry windows. The vehicle stopped two feet from the plate glass. A large pane fell and injured Constable Graham's hand as he aided with the car. Insurance status of the owner’s brother unclear.

Bowman Narrowly Falls In Wasagaming Golf Final

Helen Bowman of Dauphin reached the Wasagaming tournament final, then lost to Mary McDonald of Brandon on the 18th hole after an all square 17th. Bowman led qualifying with 48 for nine holes and posted the tournament’s best 18-hole score at 92, defeating Mrs. A R Hurst in the second day.

Tourists flock to Clear Lake area with new highway improving access to Riding Mountain National Park. Moon Lake reports strong fishing as visits to Wasagaming rise. 21,092 cars admitted at three park gates by Sept 1, up 1,971 from last year and 4,816 more passengers. New Law Requires Pump Guns Be Plugged In Canada

A 1936 amendment to the Game and Fisheries Act adds a subsection to section 17. It bans hunting with a pump gun unless the magazine is plugged or altered to hold no more than two shells. The RCMP, enforcing the act, highlights this new section.

Town Rejects Half Interest on Alberta Government Bonds

Alberta's Aberhart drew disfavor at the Town Council meeting as officials decided not to cash three Alberta Province bonds at half interest. The move would affect the sinking fund by 62.50 annually. The meeting also addressed band management and dam progress with a new boiler due soon, in the presence of Mayor McDonald and councilors.

Class Officers For Dauphin Collegiate Elected on Friday

The Dauphin Collegiate elected class officers and appointed the Athletic Society executive for the upcoming year. Leaders include Angus Mulligan heading boys athletics with Bill Miller as VP and Ken Nicholson as secretary, and Mary Slobodzian president of girls athletics with Helen Alf as VP and Mildred Ohryn as secretary.

Huge Muskmelons Grown Near Here

The Dauphin district shows strong potential for horticulture as W J Boughen reports a nine pound two ounce muskmelon from Valley River nursery. Known as Northern Yellow Canteloupe, many muskmelons are grown in the Valley River area with Fork River farmers cultivating them for twenty years. The melons require under 90 days to ripen and store well, aiding northern cultivation.

Granary and Wheat Destroyed by Farm Fire

A granary and about 600 bushels of wheat burned on Bert Sainsbury’s Spruce Creek area farm last Saturday. The fire started while he burned stubble and jumped a firebreak to ignite a straw stack, then spread to the granary.

Funeral services were held at Farrell's Funeral Chapel on Saturday for Mrs. Susan George who died in Brandon on September 2. The obituary notes the passing and services conducted locally.

Dauphin wins the regional A division tennis championship at WCW courts over Dauphin Minnedosa Brandon and Birtle. Dauphin scores eight of ten points with strong showings in ladies singles doubles mixed and men’s events led by Jack Scott Lyall McMoran and the Delmage and Marsh teams.
