Kenneth Winters leaves Winnipeg on September 15 for Montreal then travels to London and Liverpool to attend festival centers and participate with distinguished groups.
John Orisko, weed supervisor, urges Manitoba farmers to control weeds in autumn, spring, and summer. Clean machinery and tarped loads prevent weed spread and grain contamination, with inspection labels on combines signaling safety. He warns uncleaned equipment from outside weed areas causes infestations and extra costs.
Industrial minerals geologists test four shale samples near Kergwenan. From Rene Mignon land two white kaolinitic shales fire to creamy white above 2000F and steel hard at 2170F while grey shale suits face brick 1900F to 2200F. Brown shale fails for face brick below 1950F. red shale hardens 1900F to 1950F with slight scarring and possible face brick use.
Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson announced on CBC that Canada will hold a federal election on November 8 after requesting dissolution of parliament. Opposition leaders quickly condemned the timing citing uncertainty and lack of a clear majority, as negotiations on constituency redistribution loom. The Liberal government had seen shifts in party standings since 1963, with several vacancies and minor parties affecting the balance.
CN announces promotions in the prairie region with J A Naylor moving from Saskatoon to Winnipeg as special engineer. He is succeeded in Saskatoon by J J Pomer from Dauphin and J L Bremner of Dauphin becomes the new area engineer in Dauphin.
Dauphin chamber of commerce outlines fall plans including a Wednesday general meeting with J A Goodes discussing adult education classes for winter. Directors report ongoing executive meetings in July and August and list committee members and chairs across Parades, Membership and Finance, Agriculture, Tourist and Publicity, and Reception.
August brings 16 new permits totaling 271 500 boosting 1965 eight month total to 828 118 with 91 permits. Home building leads with seven single dwellings valued 94 400 and 122 000 for a 20 unit senior citizens project. Dwelling permits total 48 for 691 468 this year. Major project includes 40 000 for a retarded children's school. Commercial activity adds three warehouses worth 8 000 and three repair permits 6 500.
President M. P. Martyn of Trans- Air Limited announces a Sept 1 reorganization to pursue world wide operations. U. S. Wagner becomes general manager and four assistants named N E Weitzel S A Caldwell R Busch T A Spruston with H P Clark added as su cheremiet of flight operations. The changes aim to expand Canadian and global aviation markets.
The past week brought frequent rain with six of seven days wet and 2.91 inches total. August rainfall reached 2.39 inches with storms on ten days and a mean temperature of 62. Max 91 on August 12 13. A Friday snow event caused road closures near Russell Sandy Lake and a Wa sashaming northern gate area.
Dauphin area enrollments surge with 1,954 in five elementary schools and 962 at Dauphin Collegiate and Technical Institute by Tuesday. Final totals could exceed 2,020 for the term, with 99 new students this year, 21 from closed district schools.
The Manitoba Telephone System will extend Direct Distance Dialing to five western Manitoba communities early next year including Dugald Anola Hazelridge Lorette and Oakbank. By late 1966 or early 1967 nine more Manitoba towns will gain DDD expanding access to over 5 000 customers. Direct Distance Dialing lets users place long distance calls with minimal effort, effectively linking much of North America into one exchange.
Dauphin will host the Fathers of Confederation re enactment on Tuesday Oct 5 as part of a Western Canada tour. The event aims to reach many high school students from Dauphin Ochre and neighboring divisions with local planning led by Mr and Mrs D H McDonald and school authorities. The Manitoba Centennial corporation informed the Dauphin Centennial committee of the date and arrangements. The 1964 Queen Victoria voyage and Charlottetown conference reenactments sparked Western demand for similar performances and Toronto author Tom Tweed is noted in the accompanying text.

Rural and town councils held special meetings August 27 to approve extending the town of Dauphin’s boundaries. The lands north of the CNR tracks and west of the road from the roundhouse would transfer from the RM Dauphin to Dauphin town with taxes for 1965 and arrears, if any, remaining with the rural municipality.
