War news reached Dauphin with calm solemnity on Sunday morning. Residents recalled the last conflict while accepting the new crisis with relief that democracy would be defended. Radios murmured as citizens debated policy and prepared to stand firm, while merchants imposed a sugar limit to curb hoarding.
Dauphin public schools report 858 pupils enrolled across three institutions and 279 students in the collegiate, with 33 teachers. Enrollment varies by campus as curriculum changes stir organization, while grade XI supplements and a higher grade 12 count reflect shifting totals.
A Rural Municipality council at a special meeting on Sept 5 set aside five miles west of town near No 5 highway for airport purposes. Representation to Ottawa seeks project approval. A committee will work with MP W J Ward and the Dauphin Board of Trade. delegates included Wm Voss Mayor J E Ramsden and C D Bates.
John A. Campbell K C of The Pas Man district Rotary governor will visit Dauphin on Monday Sept 11 for official talks with the local club. Dauphin Rotary Club meets weekly at the King s Hotel and was organized in 1924.

A grandmother of a four month old dies in a fire on a farm nine miles west of Sifton in the Fishing River district. Mrs Smendziuk lit a supper fire and left children in the house causing the infant to perish. The couple had moved from a burned house last spring and are living in a granary. The mother sustained burns while attempting to rescue the baby. The two older children escaped unharmed. The husband saved his car and grain as flames destroyed the home. Dr Medd of Winnipegosis treated the mother and RCMP Constable J R Hanna led the investigation.
Sifton reports Mitchell’s van guards yielding about one hundred bushels per acre. Mountview sets special harvest home services for next Sunday with Rev. D. K. Burns. Ochre River notes a Morris car driven by G. Dornin of Winnipeg overturned due to faulty steering. vehicle badly wrecked. Winnipegosis hosts a travelling sanitarium public clinic at the school last Wednesday.
Louis Molgat of Ste. Rose du Lac Man and his three sons Jean Andre and Gildas were aboard the Donaldson Line Steamship Athenia torpedoed off the northwest coast of Ireland on Sunday evening September 3. No word yet on their fate or rescue status.
The funeral for Ada Bottomley wife of Dr E Bottomley of Dauphin took place at St Pauls Anglican Church and Riverside Cemetery on Tuesday September 5 at 2 30 pm Rev H E Bridgett officiated Pallbearers were Jack Ball Harry Oliphant F Needham Dr G W Rogers R E Dicks T Frank Malcolm Born in Reading England she came to Canada in 1906 and died September 2 at Winnipeg General Hospital aged 54 Survived by husband two daughters Mrs D A Hubbell and Mrs H Leslie both of Toronto and two sons Wm R and Charlie of Dauphin Also several brothers and sisters in England Bullmores Funeral Home arranged the service.
John Symchynshyn of Dauphin died after a short illness at Dauphin General Hospital. His funeral from the Ukrainian Catholic church to Riverside cemetery was held Monday Sept 4 at 9 am officiated by Rev A Roborecki. Pallbearers were Fred Derkacz W Derkacz N Swiderski M Swiderski A Boyko T Koshowski. He was 31, born in Ethelbert, and is survived by two brothers Nick Dauphin Sam Neepawa and three sisters Lena Chepsiuk Duck River Mary Dolinsky Pine River Polly Waronchuk Brandon.
O. C. Steele won the Dauphin Country club annual golf Open with 82. Frank Peebles was runner up at 84. Robert Fagen and Jim Olliphant Jr led the second flight, while R. S. McBride and Gerald Bird topped the third flight. Dr. A. D. McKee won long-distance driving but was placed first due to prize rules.
Lieut. Col. O. McGuirk and Lieut. W. J. A. Easterbrook were called to Winnipeg for medical board exams and remain on call for future units. They will recruit for Fort Garry Horse Mechanized Cavalry, the new unit led by Lieut. Col. J. Cox, as the old regiment is disbanded. Dauphin armoury guard includes Corp. Cathcart and Trooper Anderson. The dam south of town is under observation. forest rangers monitor the area.
More than a half million bushels of wheat handled by Dauphin elevators to date with threshing about 95 percent complete in the district. Wheat prices rose five cents daily in the past four days. Open market prices: No 1 Northern 63 cents, No 2 60, board No 1 54.5, No 2 51.5, No 3 47, No 4 40.5. Oats 2CW 34.07, 1 feed 27.5, barley 2CW 33, 1 feed 31.4, flax 1CW 1.30, rye 2CW 40.
