Clothing Drive Organized Here For October

A United Nations clothing drive seeks serviceable garments from Canadians and allied supporters. Volunteers in 51 cities will call on homes to collect coats dresses skirts trousers blouses shawls and blankets to aid liberated war victims in Belgium and other allied regions.

H V Smith to retire after 23 years in judicial district

Harold Vanwart Smith, long time public servant, will retire after 23 years in the Dauphin area. His career included town council service, mayoral tenure, sheriff appointment, school board service, and extensive church and lodge involvement. He was born in New Brunswick and has lived in Cranbrook Regina and Dauphin.

Motorcyclist Fractures Leg In Collision With Two Cars

Fred Payne of Lovering Park faces a compound leg fracture after his motorcycle hit Beerman’s car then collided with a second auto driven by M. F. Szewczyk on Gladys Street. Payne was hospitalized. Beerman’s car sustained heavy damage. total vehicle damage not reported.

Dauphin Lions club hosts a Welcome Home smoker in the town hall next Wednesday September 12 at 8 30 pm to honor men presently serving and former members of the active forces. The public is invited.

Grain elevators report ample storage for new crop

For the first time in several years elevators have plenty of storage for the incoming grain. The wheat delivery quota has been boosted to 14 bushels per authorized acre, the highest starting quota since deliveries were restricted. Open delivery is allowed on barley and oats until Sept 15.

Local School Registrations Rise Across District

Enrollment in three public schools and a collegiate program totals 1 055 this week up from 1 009 last year. Collegiate enrollment reaches 250 versus 220 a year ago. Dauphin public schools report 805 pupils, down 12 from 817 last June, with 789 at start in September 1944 and many still to enroll.

Province Offers Shared Funds for Dauphin Highways

The Manitoba provincial Department of Public Works proposes up to 5000 dollars split 50 50 with the Town of Dauphin for resurfacing Highways No 5 and No 10. Equipment and engineering help would be supplied. Work depends on soils inspection by G B Williams and council review. The plan aims for proper rather than make shift repairs.

Schools Inspector Appointed Here

Wilfred G. Booth is named inspector of public schools for the Dauphin inspectorate and will start duties this week. He comes from Brandon and fills the vacancy left by the spring death of Inspector W. J. Henderson. Booth has taught at Norwood and The Pas and previously served as superintendent at Norwood. He is succeeded at Brandon by former Dauphin inspector G. W. Brisbane.
