150 Indian Students In Mackay Residential School Opening

About 150 Chipewyan and Cree children arrive by train for Mackay Residential School in Dauphin. Ruth Thomas and Mary Bird, graduates of Prince Albert Indian school, serve as girls supervisors and organist Mary plays at prayers. Opening day led by Rev Scrase with staff visiting homes and preparing the new building for classes.

Oliphant retires after 22 years as Dauphin gaol chief turnkey

Harry M. Oliphant ends near 40 years of service in the Dauphin judicial district since 1917. He began as night guard in 1920, became chief turnkey in 1935, overseeing a staff of ten. Gifts were presented by Sheriff W J Hilton as he plans odd jobs and a west coast trip.

Manitoba committee studies province physical education needs

A three man team led by Dr. W. F. R. Kennedy will direct a survey of Manitoba physical education and recreation needs. Dr. E. J. Tyler and George Senyk join as technical members with Andrew Currie as non voting secretary and George Nick available for consultation. The committee forms from a Legislature spring resolution following prior recommendations by the Manitoba recreation and physical education committee.

Ochre River To License Trailer Homes

Ochre River council approved a by law at its Aug 13 meeting authorizing a monthly license fee of 5 for each house trailer. The license applies to owners who permit trailers to be parked on land within the rural municipality, with a 60 day tourist exemption.

Dauphin hort iculturalist A J Schmiedl along with Mrs John Birkhan and Mrs C D Castle of Gilbert Plains feature in prize lists at Brandon horticultural exhibition and provincial fruit and honey show. Castle wins major honey awards. Birkhan secures two currant prizes. Schmiedl racks up 22 firsts 6 seconds from 30 entries and earns multiple top prizes including violet charm reserve champion and Lindenburg Bros trophy.
