Average Grain Crop Report for Dauphin District

The Dauphin district reports an average grain harvest with 53 percent of wheat collected and yields around 18 to 20 bushels. Wheat mostly graded No 3 Northern due to immature kernels from May to June drought, with some No 2 and No 4. Barley harvesting is minimal and acreage is down in the district.

Fishing Operations Stop On Lake Winnipegosis

Commercial fishing on Lake Winnipegosis halted as fishermen in Camperville Duck Bay and Mafeking closed their season Aug 29 due to record low water. About 250 directly lose work with 250 more affected indirectly. Officials consider extending the season if conditions improve.

New Probation Officer Takes Dauphin Post

W. D. Ball Crawford, a Winnipeg native, arrived August 18 in Dauphin to assume probation officer duties, succeeding Erwin Lutz. A University of Manitoba graduate with a BSc in psychology and sociology, he aims to separate probation from police work and invites youths and parents to discuss problems at the court house office with the quiet, Irish descendant officer.

Dr Lorne V Jonat has assumed acting director duties at the Dauphin health unit this week in the absence of Dr David Parliament who will study at the University of Toronto for a year. Jonat is a University of Manitoba medical graduate who has practiced in Swan River for 12 years.

Elementary Enrollments Hit New Record Figures

Registration across four elementary schools shows 1 877 students enrolled in the forenoon, up from 1 818 last year. Whitmore leads with 628, Smith Jackson 294, Macneill 496, Henderson 459. Collegiate enrollment at 895 so far, likely over 900 once totals finalize.

Miss Katherine Potoski daughter of Reeve and Mrs John Potoski of Dauphin leaves for a two year overseas assignment in Jamaica under the Canadian University Service Overseas program CUSO Canadian graduates will serve as volunteers in developing countries Over 130 Canadians already served 152 to be sent this year with 300 applications received Volunteers undergo orientation at Trinity College University of Toronto and further studies at the University of the West Indies Jamaica assignment includes a week long orientation at UWI and additional courses for English speaking countries

Dauphin gains new concrete products plant plan

Mayor Harold Mobberley announced Dauphin will host a new industry by Reimer Haverlock Ltd to manufacture concrete products. The plant on Keyes Street will cover ten acres with an eight to twelve person three shift operation aiming for production by April next year and expansion to other concrete items.

Weather Summary Shows Cool Week With Frost and Rain

The past week was cool with traces of rain on two days the 24th and 28th. Heavy dew kept morning humidity high. The low on the 29th brought white frost and some areas saw killing frost in low sites. Forecast calls for brighter, warmer days and more sunshine.

Saturday Store Closing Times Expanded By Council

The by law allows shops to stay open until 9 PM on Saturdays from this Saturday through year end, ending the eight month 6 o'clock closing rule. The change marks a first full year with 6 PM closing January to August and 9 PM closing September to December with additional 9 PM hours December 18 to 24. A Monday weekly closing remains in place except for the Christmas week in which Monday is observed.

John Birkhan Wins Further Honey Laurels at Winnipeg Show

John Birkhan won the top prize at the provincial honey show in Winnipeg held August 18 and 19. He also placed second in the granulated white honey class, bringing Dauphin more laurels. Frank Garland of the Manitoba Honey Producers’ Cooperative praised the 1964 crop as marvelous with flavor color and moisture scores above average.

Daylight saving time ends in Manitoba the weekend after Labor Day with clocks turning back to standard time at 3 a.m. on September 13. The change marks the first fall back since daylight time began in Manitoba on the last weekend of April, under the Official Time act of 1963.

Forbes Wins Honors For Eggs At CNE In Toronto

Dauphin egg producer Robert M. Forbes placed in first prize grade A medium white eggs and earned a third for Canada grade A large white eggs at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. Officials note Forbes ships eggs to Winnipeg by bus for transport to the show, with 124 entries this year and Manitoba tying last year for participation.
