Owen Carr, a Roblin district farmer, faced a magistrate after allegedly firing at Constable Cunningham who went to arrest him. Carr, described as acting strangely and apparently insane, was remanded for a week.
Wm Hunter a 14 year old Indian boy was shot at Lake Manitoba on the 75th inst by accidental discharge of a shotgun. Coroner Rogers investigated and decided an inquest was not necessary. The piece ends with a call to give the boy a Business College training and let him start right.
Mr. Silverwood appeared before Robert Hawkins on a Thursday charged by the Public Parks Board with wilfully destroying valuable gid trees on 5th Avenue NW without board permission. The case was remanded to the following Monday, a conviction followed, and a $25 fine plus costs was imposed. The defendant questioned the Parks Board's jurisdiction and may appeal. E N McGirr represented the Board and C K Guild defended.
The government oil drill in the municipality of Massey Liver has penetrated more than 60 feet into solid rock. The process remains slow as rock is hard. Dr P C Robertson of the Pas visited town Monday to meet old acquaintances.
Rev Neville begins duties as Dauphin Methodist Church pastor at both Sunday services after coming from Winnipeg where he led Norwood Church. He has roles in Social Service council Religious Education Council Humane Society Rescue Home for Girls and Community Club Movement and served as Chaplain of the Manitoba Curling Association. A Past Grand Master of the 1.C.C.F and a Past Grand Officer of the A F and A.M he was recently named President of the Winnipeg General Ministerial Association. Residents are invited to meet him through the Herald and join in welcoming him Sunday.
Nature's Garden of the Northwest hosts Dauphin's First Garden Show with 250 in prizes. Open to all Dauphin Horticultural Society members and non members pay 25 cents per entry, with a 1 year membership option. Entries close September 6 and judging begins September 6 at 11 am with show open to the public at 2 pm. Officers listed: President J N McFadden Treasurer J O Spence Secretary J D McLeod.
Chris Ward lets a contract for a two storey frame dwelling 24 by 28. The frame of the Greek Catholic Church at Keld is up. The building is 44 by 46. Coun Geo O Tucker is erecting an 18 by 28 addition to a big dwelling. Mrs J Bryce adds a 34 by 46 foundation for a one storey cottage on Main Street south.
Miss Gertrude Cartwright of Winnipeg is visiting as the guest of Mrs A F Farrell during the current week.
The council debated whether to hire Carter-Halls Ridinger Co. to deliver and spread 30 000 cubic yards of gravel at 1 50 per yard. Financing the 30009 scheme hinged on bank terms, with the town considering a 5000 to 6000 buffer if the larger project stalled. If blocked, gravel would be laid on Hospital, 1st and 2nd Aves SW, and Main Street South. The Northern Manitoba commissioner seat was vacated by Prof. Wallace and offers extended to J A Campbell M P for four months from September 1. Mr and Mrs Campbell plan northward departure this week.
The Pas Herald comments on Manitoba taxes pressing business men to show cause why their last funds should be seized. It criticizes provincial and Dominion demands and notes the groaning over Eskimo aid reforms.
The Spruce Creek vicinity reports cutting finished and crop yields below average while threshing runs full swing in ideal weather. Trustees have not secured a teacher for the coming year though Rev. MecRichie does good work. Attendance at Sunday school is good and two girls Miss Lillian Henderson and Miss Dorothy Hall left for town to attend school.
Barnard has sold his Vermillion Park residence to James Hall, transferring ownership in a private real estate transaction. The deal involves a single property transaction between the two parties.
The Columbia Concert Co. arranges a Mardi Gras carnival in Town Hall and a garden show on Tuesday September 6. A boxing bout is set at Rose and Nelses Pavilion, Lake Beach, on Monday September 6. Hon. Robert Rogers may be named Lieut Governor of Manitoba. Wm. Cummings, former Dauphinite now in Sioux Lookout Ontario, visited town this week. Heaslip drug store changes hands today with H W Heaslip purchasing from Coun O E Heaslip and plans winter in California.
Multiple notices record new births: McKillop at Dauphin on August 18 a daughter born to Mr and Mrs Donald McKillop. Cochrane at Dauphin on August 25 a daughter born to Mr and Mrs R Cochrane. Blackmon Hermiston at the Manse on August 29 a daughter for Charles Russell Blackmon and Amelia Jane Hermiston of East Bay. Bennie McAulay age 7 months 17 days at Winnipegosis on August 27.
The family of C Houston thanks the people of Ochre River for kindness during his long illness and death. They ask for prayers for his wife and children as they mourn. A voice they loved is stilled, and a plate is empty in the home that cannot be filled.
Fine weather favored threshing this week with machines active across the district. Seperator returns exceed expectations despite some rust. Wheat yields ranged 20 to 30 bushels per acre, barley 30 to 40, oats 40 to 60, rye 41. James Patterson of Mountview reported 31 bushels per acre on his wheat. Fred Forsberg of Melton threshed Rosen rye averaging 41 bushels per acre.
Pilot D Brookes leads the Canadian Aircraft Aeroplane in town for the week offering short or long sky trips. Each flight carries two passengers and promotes opportunities for residents to take heavenward journeys.
Miss Alene Jackson notes the August summer course run by the Y M C A and Y W C A at the Agricultural College with lectures on Bible study economics psychology and physical training. The program featured Rev Dr McKay Prof Jones Prof Smith and others, with morning lectures and afternoon women’s work, plus thanks to President Bracken and his wife. Guests included R J Ball MP and Miss Duncan. The piece ends with an ad for Simmons sleep products.

They call the retroactive year 1920 unjust, claim it targets merchants while excluding professionals, and urge reconsideration before enforcement in 1922.
