Two Fatal Accidents Near Dauphin This Week
Two people died and seven were injured in separate highway crashes west of Dauphin within two days. Marlene Burdeniuk, 13, Gilbert Plains, perished when her car caught fire after a collision on No. 5 highway near Gilbert Plains. Carl Robblee, 23, Kenville district, died at Dauphin General Hospital after his truck rolled on No. 10 highway near Ashville. Multiple injured hospitalized in Dauphin and Gilbert Plains. inquest planned by coroner Dr. S S W Fox.

Aged Woman Burns in House Fire on Jackson Street
Mrs. Mary Twerdun, 98, suffered burns to face and hands after a kitchen fire at 377 Jackson Street South. Her grandson John Boyko rescued her entering through smoke to reach her. Dauphin firefighters, who arrived quickly, contained the blaze within an hour, gutting the kitchen and shed and causing extensive interior damage.

Snowfall continues in the Dauphin district with another inch and a quarter blanketing roads and highways. Temperatures stay low with only two days near 40 and a record low of 59 below. rain fell Friday and Saturday while roads remain in good condition apart from icy spots.

Motorists Warned Of Slippery Roads
Inspector C. N. K. Kirk of the Dauphin sub division of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police warned motorists to exercise extra caution as roads turned icy with snow and sleet. He cited several minor accidents causing extensive vehicle damage in the past two weeks and urged cooperation to keep accident rates down.

Mike Prokopowich wins Ward 5 councillor seat in Dauphin Rural Municipality with 188 of 257 votes cast. Incumbent Nykola Bazylo receives 68 votes, one spoiled ballot. With 327 eligible voters on the list, turnout reached 78 percent. Prokopowich will assume office in January.

Helicopter May Fly Over Dauphin This Saturday
Dauphinites may see the first helicopter overhead this Saturday if weather allows. An RCAF chopper is scheduled to fly over Dauphin and drop pamphlets advertising air force recruitment. If weather blocks Saturday it will appear on the first suitable weather day.

Film Council Plans District Organization
Dauphin film council held its first meeting of the season on Oct 18 with an executive meeting at 7 30 and a general meeting for film previews at 5 15. Delegates named to the Manitoba North Western Ontario film conference meet Oct 29 in Portage la Prairie. A projectionist course is planned for Dec 1 in the Legion hall and permit cards will be issued to qualified projectionists. The council has acquired a wide selection of films available to affiliated organizations upon request.

William Cruise was re-elected chairman of the Dauphin Memorial and Community Centre at a board meeting in the industrial hall. W D Strang named vice-chairman, E Johannsen treasurer, Mrs W K Marsh secretary. Committee chairs were elected to lead finance management publicity youth and sports. The DMCC plans curling club cooperation, a Dec 1 to Mar 31 concession contract, a new upstairs floor for dancing, and a dollar a foot fund drive for youth activities this winter.

Dauphin Chamber Sets December 15 Meeting Date
The Dauphin chamber of commerce fixed Thursday December 15 for its annual business meeting at the town hall and January 13 for the annual banquet. A publicity drive was authorized and a nominating committee named. The chamber seeks a guest speaker, invites local suggestions, and will publicize a London firm’s note on British goods in Canada. Membership rises to 139 with thanks to the membership chairman.

McGirr Wins Coalition Nomination At Dauphin Convention
Ernest N. McGirr KC captured the coalition nomination for the Dauphin provincial election on the second ballot at a large convention in the town hall. Hawkins Miller and Potoski also ran. Potoski eliminated first. Premier Campbell praised McGirr and Hawkins, while McGirr pledged support for the coalition government.
