First Snow of Season Hits Dauphin District

Ole Man Winter delivered the season’s first snow to the Dauphin district on Tuesday with over three inches measured at the airport 3.4 in. Winds from the north-northeast reached 20 mph and gusts to 88 mph with temperatures around 27.6 F the day and a high of 25.2 F. By Wednesday the sky cleared and streets froze creating treacherous conditions though no accidents were reported.

Election in Ward 5 To Be Held Friday

Manitoba municipal voters in Dauphin district ward 5 go to polls Friday. Nominees are incumbent Nykola Bazyilo and challenger Mike Prokopowich for the seat. Voters list shows 327 names and polls open from 9 am to 6 pm.

Edwards Creek Drainage Digging Near Half Completion

Excavation work on the Edwards Creek drainage project south of No 5 highway about five miles east of Dauphin is nearly 50 percent finished. Crews continue building bridges along a 10 mile ditch to control spring and summer floodwaters and protect surrounding crop lands.

Dauphin Eaton's Good Deed Club Broadcast Set

Dauphin children ages five to 16 may audition for Eaton's Good Deed Club broadcast on November 5 from the Dauphin theatre stage. Club members can pick up cards at Eaton's. auditions arranged by writing or calling. Doors open 9 a.m., program runs 10:30 to 11 a.m., with 45 minutes of cartoons followed by the broadcast.

One New Director Named At D.M.C.C. Annual Meeting

Five directors were elected for the 1950 51 term at the Dauphin Memorial and Community Centre annual meeting. W Cruise E W Hawkins Charles Volk R Shooter and G Dowler were elected to two year terms. The treasurer E Johansen and others reported improved finances with total revenue of 23321.58 and debt reduction of about 7000. The board includes town rural council members and the mayor and reeve.

Basil Horsfall Singers to Stage Two Dauphin Shows

Basil Horsfall leads the Canadian operatic group in two upcoming Dauphin performances under the Lions Club auspices. The program Cavalcade of Song features Offenbach and Verdi excerpts sung in English, while Operatic Carnival includes Faust Pagliacci scenes and light operetta hits. Fire Prevention Poster Contest Winners Named

Winners of the 1949 fire prevention poster contest for school children were announced Monday night after judging by four local men. Prizes will be awarded to seven pupils in grades 2 to 8 with five honorable mentions. Posters will be displayed this weekend in Eaton's store window. Georgia Reid won top prize in group A with the slogan Match Can Do It. Frances Huzy led group B with I'm Dangerous. Ronnie Rae topped group C with a poster of matches as danger.

The Most Reverend Louis Ralph Sherman Archbishop of Rupert's Land will visit Dauphin's St. Paul's Church with Mrs. Sherman for services on Oct 23. His career includes Creedence as Primate, education at New Brunswick Oxford and Manitoba, and leadership roles in Calgary Winnipeg and Toronto.

Golden Wedding Celebrated by Szewczyk Family at Dauphin

The Szewczyk family marked their 30th wedding anniversary with a gathering at the Greek Catholic hall in Dauphin. More than 140 relatives and friends attended the event, which included Premier D. L. Campbell and MLA Robert Hawkins. The ten children reside in Canada and the United States, with origins tracing to Austria.

Edwards Creek drainage project seeks extra provincial funds

Dauphin rural council forwarded a request for an additional 50000 from the province for Edwards Creek drainage work this year. With 315000 total funding and 125000 to be used now, officials say continuing the work could save crops and allow completion until freeze up.

Nomination date set for provincial election in Dauphin

Nomination day for the provincial election is set for next Thursday October 27 with election day November 10. J E Wallwin named returning officer for Dauphin province with nominations noon to 1 pm at the town hall. G I Jackman CCF named as definite candidate for seat. An advancing nomination convention is planned for Monday afternoon at the town hall. Redistribution enlarges legislature to 57 members with new Dauphin boundaries and 17 polling stations. Premier to Speak Here at Dauphin Nomination Meeting

Premier D L Campbell will address electors of the Dauphin provincial constituency at a convention in the town hall next Monday October 24 at 3 p.m. The meeting is to nominate a candidate in support of the non partisan Coalition government of Manitoba.
