Displays to mark Fire Prevention Week in Dauphin

The Dauphin volunteer fire department plans a Thursday 3 p.m. display at Main street and First avenue north to showcase its new fire truck and equipment. Water from hoses will be directed along Main street, with a running commentary via loudspeaker. A school poster contest with prizes and matches distributed by the chamber of commerce accompany the events. Fire loss through last month reached about 11 355 dollars, including a church fire in April, with 23.80 dollars total for 1948 fires in Dauphin and notable incidents at the local furniture mill and grass fires.

Insurance Increases for Dauphin Tourist Park Cabins

Dauphin parks board boosted insurance to 6700 covering park buildings and cabin contents. Administrative building 2000. main cabin 1000. several smaller cabins insured. 1200 for all cabin contents. Board approves moving two cabins to higher ground and discusses skating rink improvements with dressing rooms and showers.

District Teachers Hold Annual Convention Here

Dauphin district teachers plus teachers from Dauphin Ochre School Area No 1 Massey River Ethelbert and Gilbert Plains will convene today and Friday. D B Moorhead provincial normal school at Tuxedo will address the public at 7 pm tonight and a film Who Will Teach Your Child will be shown. Friday session will feature Scott Bateman from the department of education speaking on school grants.

Open Season Declared on Manitoba Grouse and Prairie Chickens

Manitoba declares an open season from October 10 to 15 on ruffed grouse and prairie chickens except in the southwest, with bag limits set at four per day and eight in possession. No season for pheasants or Hungarian partridge.

David Justice to Retire as Dauphin Postmaster After 60 Years

David Justice, long time Dauphin postmaster since 1943, retires this week. James A. Cressey of Winnipeg takes over as postmaster and arrived Wednesday. Justice, born 1885 in Erin Ontario, served in Canada’s army earning the Military Cross and held civic roles before retirement. He and Meta Holder Justice have three children.

Local Druggist Buys Wasagaming Drug Store

Gerald S. Porter, Wasagaming pharmacist, has bought Henson's drug store and took over Sept. 10. He plans to enlarge the premises install new fixtures and rename it Porter's Drug Store. The business had been run by A. R. Henson of Minnedosa for about 16 years.

Flying Fortress B 17 Makes Dauphin Stop At Air Strip

A 1944 B 17 Flying Fortress, one of the largest aircraft to land at Dauphin airport, arrived from Milwaukee via Winnipeg and New York, staying about 52 hours. Lt Gen James H Doolittle rode aboard as crew of six prepared to depart for Canada and the U S.

Nominations Open For 12 Municipal Election Vacancies

Nomination day for the 1949 municipal elections is next Tuesday with 12 seats to fill across town and rural councils and school boards. Election is Oct 21. Nominations accepted 1 to 2 pm with designated clerks handling each body.

Shooting Season Opens in Dauphin District

General James H. Doolittle leads a party of US military officials and businessmen to the Dauphin area praising it as among North America's best duck hunting. The group spent four days in Lake Winnipegosis country and all shot their limits. The party stayed at Croill Hunter’s Waterhen Lake camp and flew from Dauphin in a US Air Force B-17. The guests planned a return visit next year.
